On dyno, which gear is usually used?

Some said 3rd gear run, some claimed 4th gear run is more accurate to measure. So, which is more commonly used?

And also, what is the dynodynmics correction factor is from wheels HP to crank HP?

Thanks in advance.

Generally the gear closest to 1:1 --in standard T box this is 4th gear.

4th is closest, and as for correction factor, who knows. Have you had any stock 996tt's there. to calculate back to 420bhp based on what they produced on that dyno?

On upsolute site, it says stock 420hp and chipped 510hp. Based on that, the correction factor is 40%?? That cannot be right.

I would not use what they say, too many factors. You have to use, the factory rated bhp on a stock car compared to what it did on THAT dyno. otherwise it is irrelevant. Also, you need to do it for a stock 996tt, because losses will be different on model changes.

This may be a dumb question but:
what would happen to the rwhp numbers IF the dyno run was done in 3 rd gear?
Do the numbers get better?

I think they need to do more correction factors which gives you even more errors. Dynos already have lots of correction going on and this just adds to it.

Most people use dynos as an upgrade comparison. They will dyno stock and then dyno after mods to see what improvement they got.Other than that it really isn't too useful as some dynos are too conservative and others are to liberal.

I think my tuner uses 3rd to dyno. If you baseline in 3rd, make ALL your dyno runs in 3rd. As 951 said, it's just the changes/improvements your looking for, so why do 135mph on an dyno!!!

Usually 4th is used because it is a 1to1 gear ratio.

For your reference my car with EPL flash alone (everything else bone stock) made 400 whp and 480 Tq on a Dynodynamics Dyno. A stock car made about 330 whp on the same dyno.

4th gear like said is the closest to 1:1

In regards to the correction factor I believe if you are rwd it would be 8% and if you are awd it would be 14%.

so, the concensus is 4th gear pull for the closest gear ratio. What about elevation, could that be a factor to higher or lower reading?
