Fuel filter options please

I have a second fuel pump mounted in the spot the OEM fuel filter occupies (traditional Proto location), but I have the upper OEM intake, which does not leave much room for a large fuel filter. Has anyone added a small, in-line fuel filter after a second in-line fuel pump, located in this spot? I am looking for a solution to add a small fuel filter after the second pump and would appreciate any pictures, part numbers, etc.

John, I have a small -6 billet filter. Will get pics later for ya. You will need to remove your fuel rail to weld a -6 male AN fitting on it.

John, there are a number of options, out there. Just buy (in advance) the additional filters in case they're discontinued. Seriously, you could check a number of the local hot rod suppliers like Jegs and Summit for 4-6 micron fuel filters that are small...

I'm running a Canton fuel filter on the track car, but it is HUGE!

These are awesome filters and you already have AN fittings in the car with the additon of the 2nd pump. They make these filters in 100 micron and 10 micron that both fit in this threaded, O'ringed, housing.

Jegs, Summit, lots of places sell these for fuel systems. Mike is right though - get a few filters. The stainless ones can be cleaned but best to have a few spares.

j.mitchell70 is infamous around these parts
Only piping in as someone who works an engineer in the fuel filter industry, you do not want anything larger than a 10 micron filter. 100 micron filters only serve as a means of filtering large particles out of your lines before your fuel pump, you want a 10 or 2 as your final filtration. We have several nice setups where I work but I think they would be too big for your application.

Thanks for all the replies.

I just took some measurements. I would need a fuel filter with no more than 3" overall length to fit in-line "easily". Anything over 3" and I would have to make a "U" to go under the pump and fabricate from there with additional fittings, etc. (I would like to keep it simple with a single 3" long filter, if possible).

Does anyone know the pipe fitting size of the 044 pump?

Does anyone know of a 3" long fuel filter with the proper pipe thread size?

I found something in 6 AN, 8 AN and 10 AN thread sizes, so all sizes seem to be covered....

Would I require a male/male or male/female style filter?

Any adapters required to attach to the pump or would it be direct fit with an "AN" thread?

-6 hose is what I did. I looked at the stock line and -6 was slightly larger. Male/Male for the filter. I think I got the Russell Performance 650140.

You just need a Steel -6 male fitting to weld to the rail and a fitting off the fuel pump to -6 male.

Here is what I did.....

Thanks, Don. I am trying to avoid welding, etc. I think I found something that will fit in-line. Take a look at this...

Barry Grant Mini In-Line Fuel Filters

Simple to install, inspect, and clean
Characterized by a billet aluminum housing with threaded cap and O-ring seals, this mini in-line fuel filter contains a pleated, 2" diameter stainless steel element which can clean to 8 microns. When installed ahead of a fuel pump, the filter protects the pump from dirt and debris. The filter can also go on before a carburetor to protect its needles and seats.

Don, I think I will require the fitting below to connect to the pump. Along with a coupler of some sort to connect the BG filter to the blue adaptor.
Does this sound correct?

Also, what about the other side - will I require "another adapter" to connect the BG filter to the OEM line or is that a -6 AN female connection that would mate with the filter?

This is an adapter fitting for the Bosch Motorsports #0 580 254 044 “044” fuel pump.
This will produce a -6AN male inlet from the female metric thread on the pump itself. This includes the appropriate sized O-ring with the fitting.

John, is that filter setup for fuel injection? It looks like it might be for non-high pressure application looking at the description. You will have to run a -6 line and weld a fittting to the rail unless you find some sort of an adapter which I never had any luck in finding.

Don, I have no idea if it's for FI or not - I didn't realize there was a difference. I will call to find out.

Ari, I am trying to find a hi-flow in-line race filter that fits in the amount of space I have...I am told the race style filters flow very well.

Don, what type of adapter did you try to find?

Do you recall what type of fitting is on the filter end of the OEM hose that runs from the fuel rail to the OEM fuel filter?

I do not. It is not anything common I remember that. That why I ended up taking out the rail and welding on a male -6 fitting to the end of it.
