Stock turbo life span

Hi guys, new to the forum but been lurking around here for the last year. Sorry for the noob question.... I heard from a friend who heard from a friend saying the stock turbos on the 996TT usually need to be replaced around 70 - 80k miles. Is this true? Something due to the wear on the seals. I'm planning to buy a 996TT soon and keeping it for a long time. I'm trying to learn and pickup as much knowledge as possible before diving in. Responses are much appreciated.

I know of 4 turbos what have 100k and one that has 200k miles on stock turbos. 3 of those cars are on this forum. So if you take care of them, over 100k miles is feasible.

Even if a k16 turbo fails , you can buy one for ~$400 on here. So really not that big of a deal. There are other more expensive things like clutch i would be worried about.

The original turbos always last too long. You want to change them to something bigger and they just wont die

Under normal driving conditions, do you let the turbo cool down for a certain amount of time before shutting off the engine?

Thanks for all the replies.. Much appreciated.

No special cooldown for the car (I do at the track - 3 or so lap progressive heat up and a good 5-10 minute ride after a session) - during normal daily driving I have about ten minutes of highway driving at 60 MPH for 4th or 5th gear - it's a small town highway that is HEAVILY screened with Laser and Radar - speed limit is 50 and anything over 60 gets you a conversation with the man - so it gives me a nice ten minute drive in and out of the house. T2 knocks on wood!!
