Interesting perspective on this according to the CHP:
If the pieces are moving at the time they hit the car, it is not your fault.
If they are stationary, it is your fault for hitting the object.
Keep this in mind if you ever experience the same situation.

sorry to hear like others about this incident, hopefully nothing too major has damaged to the vehicle, glad to hear you're okay to walk away from this while not being part of the accident, and I'm sure your car will be fixed just fine if it's in the right hands; g'luck man!
and good info on the CHP advise!

If the thing is just sitting there in the road and you hit it, it is considered a collision and you would be at fault for that and your collision deductable would apply.
Unless it's an animal. Animal strike is always comprehensive loss.

Damages are: all 3 underside covers, one fender liner, one front lip and some misc pieces. There are also dents in the metal-work underside, scuffs on my front bumper (should buff right out) and a couple loose coolant hoses that needed to be reattached.
The part from the bus that caused the damage was a piece of engine block and the oil filter.
I feel lucky that the damage was not more severe - and thankfully, nobody was hurt.
