Ordered Giro front rotors

FINALLY going to have a chance to get on track this year at a DE in a couple of weeks. Took a close look at the front rotors, and decided that they were about done.

I decided to order the 350mm Giro front discs from Rennstore, and leave the rears stock. Might look a little odd with slotted fronts and drilled rears, but I'll get used to it.

I ordered them today from Craig at Rennstore. I'll keep you posted on the install when they arrive.

nice! I just installed a set. went with 350mm front and rear. the fit and finish is pretty impressive.
do you have GT2 brake ducts on the rear?

the 996tt and GT2 use the same exact stamping but the shape is much smaller for better cooling. I have a set of stock version that I marked with the GT2 version. It just needs to be trimmed. let me know if you want them.

I have a set of the 350mm rears and they worked great for me this past weekend at Barber Motorsports Park. I bought mine from Craig as well. I'm using up a new set of stock GT3 fronts before ordering the RSS 350mm fronts. After one weekend, the front drilled rotors are already developing small cracks.

I'm assuming that you are using the GT3 6 pot front calipers? Did you order the 997TT front fitment rotors? Please let us know how the install goes.

Thanks

Hey Oak:
Those backing plates look cool. Did you buy a GT2 part and then mark the old ones?
I'm interested if Jon can't use them.

Thanks

Jon,
I did the GT2 6 piston conversion years ago. I had my carriers modified mounting points that were filled and re indexed to fit the oem GT2 calipers and rotors. if you look closely you can see where the holes were plugged.

this modification is not necessary, as I did this mod before the 997 were introduced. all that is needed now to upgrade to 6 piston is a set of 996 GT2/3 front calipers and 997tt rotors.

JonB,
yes, I installed a set of GT2 brake ducts and notice the 996tt heat shields were blocking the direct air flow from the ducts. I went ahead and order a pair of GT2 to see the difference.

I did mark my 996tt heat shields with the GT2 version. all I ask is for who ever get my marked version, mark theirs after they have been trimmed and send them to someone else that is modifying their brake/ducts.

No use installing rear ducts with out installing the GT2 heat shield as the 996tt shields block the air flow from the ducts.

Oak, do you by any chance have the GT2 rear duct part numbers and who carries them? Price?

I guess I can just trim off some of the stock rear heat shield and make it work. What do you think?

Larry,
I can look it up... I'll post them up.....

I think Dan at Vivid sells the rear ducts as a kit.

Oak -

Thanks! Yes, I'd like to have them. I need to order the rear brake ducts as well. I'll pass the backing plates along after I've cut them and marked mine. I'll send you a PM for shipping info.

I still have the stock 4-piston calipers up front. I don't really have a lot of brake problems (knock on wood!) other than cracking the rotors. Even after three days at Road America, where your brakes get a workout. I had more problems when I first got the car, but now I seem to use the brakes less - seems to help my lap times too.

Hey Jon:
I'll get in line behind you for the marked shields. I have the GT2 ducts already, but I guess they aren't really doing much good.

Thanks for passing this along Oak.

Hey guys, are these Giro a direct replacement for stock rotors? Mine are cracked pretty bad after the last DE and will need a set before the next DE...

Thanks!

Almost. The girodisk rotors are larger (350 mm). The kit includes a pair of shim disks that go between the caliper and the hub to make up the difference, and some longer bolts as well. Nothing else needs to be done. They will fit under a stock 18" wheel. I got the slotted rather than cross-drilled rotors.

I'll be back in the US in a couple of weeks. Let me know if you want some more info.

Say I invest in the girodiscs....can I get just the wear parts (the rotor) and use the hat again, for a savings relative to just getting more Zimmermans....?

Otherwise, for DE the minor weight issue is not worth the change to me....

TIA

Jeff
