How loud, in the car, is the cross-flow with the muffler delete? Does it drone at all without the muffler?

It's fairly loud and it does drone some. With the muffler delete, it's straight pipes - there is no cross-flow. The cross-flow is inside the muffler and is bypassed with the muffler bypass pipes.

The sound is not as loud as I had expected, but IMHO, more than most would want on a daily basis. It is also very attention getting, as it is pretty loud to others outside the car...especially in crowded or compact areas.

scott is infamous around these parts
John,
Wow- didn't realize I had started a two page discussion. I am looking for a new exhaust. What I like about your new system is the changeability. For track days, I could go cat and muffler delete. And for the rest of the time, with both on. The system looks beautiful. How easy is it to exchange the components? ie. is this something I can change out quickly?

Thanks, Scott

I see, I thought that the muffler delete was cross-flow also.

Hi Scott,

Yes, that is correct. You have the option of removing the muffer for weight savings or keeping the muffler installed and simply bypassing it with the muffler bypass pipes.

Bypassing the muffler is very quick and easy. You just have to remove the mid pipe and secure the muffler bypass pipes on the V-Flange at the rear of the cat. It only takes about 5 minutes and is very simple and easy to do...

If you want to reduce the weight at the same time, removing the muffler is not that much more work, once you have done the by-pass pipes. It's just the two straps and it comes off and re-installs very easily compared to the OEM system (which is a pain to R&R). It's only another 5 minutes to remove the muffler completely.

Here are a couple of shots I just took today...

996-471,

No, the idea of the straight pipe is to provide a quick, direct outlet for the exhaust gases. It's designed for maximum performance and light weight, mainly for track events, but can be used by those that desire the sound and performance for the street.

My car had fabspeed muffler deletes on it when I got it. It was very loud, but the tone on the highway is what killed me. I just thought maybe the straight pipes were built like a x-pipe, and would change the frequency of the noise. Thanks for your help. I will be buying an exhaust soon hopefully.

The cross-flow muffler internals are a straight through design (no baffles), meaning it is designed just like a set of cross-flow straight pipes. The exception being that the "X-flow" portion is encased in a chamber and the pipes are perforated in a special pattern that contributes to the unique, exotic sound. It does, in fact alter the frequency of the sound, much for the better and you can still hear the turbos whistle, as they spool (which sounds very good, too).

Here is an illustration that will show you what I mean...you see, it's cross-flow straight pipes inside...

It would be great to have a cross pipe option with no muffler, for those that want a little less noise than conventional straight pipes.

I just removed my straight pipes and put my stocker back on, and I can't believe I ever liked it. The noise was ridiculous, and I am now embarrassed. Oh well, too late
