thinking of a new project.. I have a TIP with aftermarket exhaust, thinking of a way to reduce the exhaust tones in the cabin of the car... do you guys think the dyno mat type product installed under the carpet of the rear seats and rear window area will cut down on the noise?

 

not sure, but worth a try. But I can tell you that H-pipe crossover only drops drone by a hair.

 

going to ask my body shop what type of job it would be to pull out all the back carpet and trim and install some sound proofing materials..

 

Just remember, sound proof material also keeps sounds in.

 

im trying to block exhaust tones from the engine area... I dont think the noise is already in the cabin... what do you mean by keeping noises in?

I was just saying if sounds find its way in (and you kown they will), they will stay in and you may find them echoing in the cabin. Has anyone done this?

 

good point but so far the only real noise that I would like to soften up would be the exhaust noise... its fine with the radio on, but some passengers dont care for the loud exhaust, so if I can damper it down some... only a plus.

Just trying to clear things up a bit for me. if the noise you are talking about starts at 2200 rpm and goes through 2600-2700 rpm, it is drone. that is the only thing I have issue with. I have lessened it a lot, but doing a custom exhaust with crossover, but it is still there. sound proofing that doesn't add 100lbs or more isn't going to change this resonant vibration. if your noise is throughout the rpm range, then it is different than what I have experienced.

 

Maybe in addition to the sound proofing, try putting a rubber or urethane bushing on the muffler strap where it connects to the engine cradle/ rear bumper area.....

its not an exhaust rattle.... its the tone... some drone.. I cant be the only one with aftermarket exhaust that thinks its a little too loud... my gallardo with a tubi was loud, but a different sound.. higher pitch that was not too bad.. maybe because this car is a TIP, it sounds louder

 

I don't think dynamat will do what you want it to. Low frequency sounds, like exhaust drone, are much harder to block than high frequency sounds, as they penetrate and spread much easier. (Think about how your "regular" speakers have to be staged properly and aimed in a certain direction, whereas the subwoofer can be placed pretty much anywhere.) You may be able to block out some road noise, but I don't think dynamat will do anything for the exhaust drone.

 

the tone you are talking about is Drone. it will not go away with the matt. but you can try. Next time you are in your car, see what rpm range it is real bad in. if it is the range I mentioned + or - 200 rpm it is drone and putting sound proofing will lessen the sound but it will not go away. it's like the terminator, no matter what you do it comes back.
