ignition key / steering lock problem

Anyone experience a problem: when the car is turned off and the ignition key removed, the message, "ignition key not removed" comes on when you open the door to leave. I tried putting the key in, turning it, car on/off, but still and help. You end up not being able to lock the car. I think it's related to the steering lock. Anyone have this problem???

Maybe try some silicone spray or graphite in the key hole.

It sounds like an ignition switch issue. Lots of information regarding ignition switch and ingition assembly replacement on Renntech.

I just replaced mine a few weeks ago. Do a search for the Boxster ignition key stuck. The part actually sits about 5 inches back of where the key goes in, and is replaceable by going under the dash. About a half hour for your first time, and less than $20 with shipping for the part. My key was just getting tough to turn and remove, now it's like new.

I had it happen as well. Something in the ignition breaks causing what you say. in my case the spring loading seemed to be working backward. Be careful it's possible to engage the starter without a key and leave it on causing starter and battery problems.

It's a known problem. Mine was fixed for $100 deduct on my easycare.

Thanks for everyones reply. I spoke with Kevin W in Redwood City, he works on all sorts of cars and he knew exactly what the problem was. My AC was also not working and he knew it was related to the ignition. The ignition switch wears out and becomes really stiff. After cranking the engine over, the ignition switch can stick and not return to the proper position. The key needs to be turned just slightly counter clockwise and the AC works. I still need to replace the whole unit because the computer still thinks the key is in the ignition when its not. So I still cannot lock the car.
