PDK vs tiptronic S
#5
Porsche has had PDK for about 25 years, it is only now that it is making it into street cars. the 956 and 962's were the first cars to have it and the first cars to win a race with it anywhere. So it is by no means new, nor is it not able to handle the power of a turbo, considering that the 962 had gobs of power. It is just getting it to work economically in a street turbo is the issue. No one wants visions of the GTR with the Turbo and GT2. Much better transmission than the Tip for sure. For racing, probably nothing is better, but like the tip, it is to unemotional for me. I like the 6 speed even if it makes me slower. It takes more skill to drive a 6 speed well.

That is true, Porsche had the PDK in the 956/962 but these units never had an automatic mode. If you have the Excellence magazine of the release of the PDK read it, great article and it says that Porsche is developing a PDK unit just for the turbo mainly for the added torque and one of the biggest problem is to make it smooth and not jerky in automatic.

yup, very true. I drove the new 911 carrera with the PDK and it is so smooth that you cannot feel the shifting. Not sure I like that, but definitely an efficient setup. If they do that fro the turbo, I can see 1/4 mile times going down nearly 3/4 to a full second, with better launch and no loss in boost between shifts.

SMG was fun IMO. The hard shifting allowed you to time the torque pop to start nice fishtails. Maybe it wasn't the smoothest, definitely not a real substitute for the masses seeking an auto. But it was a real auto 6 speed manual, like a Ferrari. In fact the M3 was very much Ferrari like in philosophy given the "racy" nature of the engine.
Maybe the latest cars with PDK will be faster, but I agree that all the automation take a lot of emotion away. Sure you'll win drag races, but it won't be fun except for your ego.

I like the PDK about as much as I like the Tip - Not at all. It takes the sport our of sports car in my opinion, as it is totally unemotional, and I feel uninvolved with the car. But porsche has to do it to get even with the competitions acceleration. I wish they sold it with two, smg and pdk.

I agree with Prche951, with a manual you get drivers feedback and to me shifting and heel & toe is something I like doing. In the last issue of Excellence (Yellow GT3) it says that PDK ads 66 LBS.

To me, PDK is a more advance version of automatic transmissions. Despite torque converters, clutchs or any parts of them, PDK, SMG, tips are all "auto" transmissions. No pushing gear level into gates and timing clutch padel. PDK for faster shifts and tip for smoother shifts. To each of its own.
