2004 996TT Starting problems

I'm the proud new owner of a 2004 996 TT. Car has 1100 miles. In the past couple of days I've had some problems related to the fuel system.

1. while driving in traffic 2 days ago the "check engine..drive to workshop" warning came on. I went to the delaer and they diagnosed it as a loose fuel filler cap.

2. Yesterday I also notice that the fuel gauge level is inconsistent, sometime showing more fuel than is in the tank. Then today the car wouldn't start..it cranked ok several times but didn't fire up. On a hunch I unscrewed the fuel cap and got a loud whoosh of air sucked into the tank. Once I replaced the cap the car started up just fine and ran as if there'd been no problem.

3. Finally, tonight I filled up the tank (with 13 gallons) but the gauge/warning message is showing that the fuel level is low.

All of these have got to be related. Feedback would be appreciated. Thx.

I had the same problem. There is some type of sensor in the fuel tank that needs to be checked/replaced.

You'll have to take it in again...

Car has 1200 mi. Not covered by warranty!

Further development on my 2004 996 TT with only 1200 miles. Can't express how ticked off I am right now.... Took the car in for service after the problems described in the first post. Now they're telling me that it's going to be at least $3200 worth of work and the Porsche factory rep says it's not covered by the warranty. They said the gas was contaminated but all I did was put Chevron Supreme 91 gas in there every time. They said they found severe corrosion of the fuel system. How is that possible? I 've been babying the car for the 6 weeks I've had it.

Babying your car would have nothing to do with the corrossion in the tank. The corrosion would be from water in the fuel you are using. I would try to speak wiht Chevron and see what they will do to compensate you for your damages as it is their tank causing the problem. Hopefully, they will step up to the plate. Please keep us updated.

Friend of mine with a BMW, same problem but worse, his car would not start at all. He was pissed until the dealer stated there was a lot of water in the gas tank. The owner immediately went to the gas station and reported it. The owner of the station had the tank in the ground checked and there was a high level of water contamination in it. Many others were affected by the Bad Gas. The BMW bill was over $2000 and not under warranty. The insurance of the gas station owner paid for the work as it was explained to me and I independently confirmed the story.

This is rediculous. Do we need to test the gasoline before putting it into the tank now? Maybe put a match to it and see if it'll burn.
