oil filter cap leak

Went for a spirited morning drive, popped the bonnet upon return. Have got a minor leak at the oil cap. small amount of oil in the funnel, a bit sprayed onto the back of airfilter panel.

Did an oil change recently, replaced the large O ring. Realized I had over torqued 25 ftlbs instead of newtons. just retorqued to spec. sprayed some cleaner in the funnel area and could still see bubbles at the seam of the cap (idling). Took few runs high rpm and no leak.

Anyone have similar experience? Im thinking even if no oil leaks, there shouldnt be an air leak. Do I need a new cap?

I'd avoid running engine and replace oil filter housing with new one pronto.

Running engine with any critical component like an oil filter housing that is leaking, cracked is just asking for big trouble. Engine only needs to lose oil pressure for just a split second to suffer serious if not terminal damage.

Sincerely,

Rockster.

have a point there. But i drove 150kms since the retorquing and the location is dry as a whistle. appears fixed.

Leaking of even air around oil fillter housing not a comforting sign.

Did you perhaps get o-ring in wrong, or nick or ...?

Over-tightening could have cracked housing at a thread root.

I'd check the filter housing before and after every trip for a few days and if it remains free of any signs of oil seepage I think you're ok.

OTOH, a new one so cheap and I hate using a questional part in a critical area.

But of course your call.

Sincerely,

Macster.

I think the cap was tightened it to a degree where it did not seal correctly but not enough to crack it. Did inspect for damaged threads and cracks. Oring went on by hand, sits in the groove. thanks for advise, yes my plan is also to monitor. not easy to get parts like this, usually not in stock at dealer.
