996TT exhaust vs 996 cost?
Started looking at exhaust options for my future 996TT and WOW are they a lot more than what I had available for my C4S!
Is this difference because of the cats are part of exhaust or what?

that's what happens when you have a car that costs 70% more than a C4S. TT stands for Turbo Tax.

I read once that if a company were to sell an exhaust for under $2000, it wouldn't be a decent exhaust considering what it takes to produce a quality 996TT exhaust. I have no idea if this is true or not though? Can anyone clarify?
I'd hope that the cost difference isn't purely from Turbo Tax

depends on if you want looks and performance yes you can get a muffler shop to make you one will it sound as nice and not resonate at certain rpms? maybe
if you were to order the right mufflers and the xpipe from burns n all the right flanges with some mandrel bends you could fab up a rear exhaust for probably under 1000$ and get a nice x style but you are gonna need one hell of a muffler shop guy and likely it wont be very nice if its mig welded. from previous experience mig welded custom exhausts flow as much as properly fitted n cut pieces tig welded.
but you have to ask yourself how much performance is worth 3-6k if i had a tig welder or a real nice mig id make my own would it take a couple trys and maybe some changes to get it right most likly is it gonna be cheaper then 3k yes, will it sound n out perform that nicely r&d'd exhaust thats yet to be seen.

the reason it is so hard to get an exhaust system well designed is because after the cats it is a very tight fit in there. I did do a custom exhaust and it turned out costing me as much as a good quality exhaust in the end, about $3500 or so. I love my exhaust as it has a crossover from one side to the other and it has race mufflers, but I am sure I could have purchased something similar for what I paid for it.

Speedtech has the least expensive 996TT exhaust I've seen so far. Europipe is the most expensive with everyone else falling in between (excluding the titanium systems). Drone seems to the the biggest complaint among the various manufacturers. Someone on the board did a dyno test on all them and there wasn't that big a difference in power output. Sound clips are fairly useless to compare by. You have to listen to the systems in person.

I could have sworn I saw a Titanium exhaust with actuator for 7k plus which would make it more than EP, but I cannot remember what company.
