why can't I fill my gas tank all the way up?

I use Got2's procedure and it works for me every time...including the fact it leaves a little gas in the overflow pocket....but it might click off a couple times even by pulling up on the handle, just keep at it and eventually it fills it.

I've seen this problem discussed on the 996 NA board too....mostly related to fuse E6. The upside down nozzle technique works on my 87 930 when it gets feisty once in a while, but for the TT, I just use Got's technique. Porsche obviously has the problem all worked out for the LeMans series

The 9 o'clock position works well for me. I do remember the first time I ever filled the car up and got 3/4 tank...that was pretty damn strange. However, I read up on the issue here, and have been holding the nozzle at 9 o'clock ever since with no issues getting a full tank. Good luck!

This works for me every time:
1. Put the nozzle in and engage the hands-free mechanism at the maximum.
2. When it clicks off, grip the handle and lift it up and toward the car like you were pouring a bucket.
3. While holding in that position, squeeze the handle all the way and stay in that position until it clicks off again.
4. You now have a full tank and you should see a tiny pool of fuel sitting on the metal flapper.

I'm new to the scene and didn't know about the electric "flapper" valve at the bottom of the neck that opens when you put in the nozzle. I had the stereo replaced last week and I guess they popped the fuse for that valve. We went to the gas station and it wouldn't take a half gallon. Went to another station, same thing. The "miles left" display was slowly ticking down so I went back to the mechanic and one of the helpers pulled out a boroscope to look down into tank. Completely blocked. Then, our mechanic came out and explained about the electric flapper valve and its probably just a fuse. It was and they fixed it in a couple of minutes. Really scared me for a few hours there!!! I'm sure everybody already knows about this, but just wanted to share my experience.

I don't know the ins and outs of the 996 evap. system. But overfilling is most definately a no no.

What works for me is to fill up like normal. When it stops, I just fill the rest slowly till it stops again, at which point its full. I've changed the fuse, no help. I'm pretty sure its the vent line. I'll probably have it fixed next oil change.
You would figure with so many people having the same problem there would be a recall of something to fix. Everything else in my car works great so its only a minor nuisance to me right now.

Lock it at the max. Then when it it stops, fill the rest slowly.

9:00 works everytime
Since reading this thread and clocking the fuel nozzle handle at nine o'clock, I can fill up every time. When it clicks off, I can't add another drop without overfilling. This system works well on my 2003TT.

I have hadthe issue on seceral other p-cars but not my 05 Turbo S. I talked to seceral other Turbo S owners and they confirmed they too did not have the issue. As I stated before, the problem was fixed with the Turbo S.

For the people that said leave the key in the on position, this is one of the things you should not do, on the 4wd models the fuel tank saddles the front differential, because of the shape of the fuel tank the fuel level cannot be read beyond a certain point, I believe 19 Liters, once fuel drops below this point fuel level is than calculated based on consumption. leaving the key on and then refueling can cause issues with the calibration of the fuel level sender and the instrument cluster which will throw the readings off on the gauge, and no one wants a trip to the dealership to recalibrate it. also if you plan to change your battery, it would be best to do it with a 1/4 tank or more of fuel.
