What is a "stage 2" over-rev

I have heard of warranty issues/voids arising out of "over rev conditions." Two questions:

1. the ECU is designed to prevent going past the redline (i.e., it cuts back spark, etc.) so if you do blow past redline is that a design/manufacturer issue; and

2. Can't a little ECU tinkering find and erase this history.

Thoughts?

1. If you drop it to 2nd from 5th then no, it´s not gonna stop it from over-revving.

2. No idea.

Got the first point on the 5th to 1st-- so running it fast through 1st gear and hitting the rev limiter is NOT the issue?

No, it´s not. There´s been something written about your problem in another thread, not sure about the thread, but it´s about two weeks old at the most, some guy buying a supposedly immaculate 996TT and having the same issue.

the rev limiter only works by cutting throttle when accelerating into higher RPM. If you down shift earier than you shoulld, throttle cut out cannot stop the rpm from overrevs. That is driver error not design flaw. That is why nearly all overrevs with a rev limiter are from downshifting, not from getting on the gas and forgetting to shift. As I understand the ECU, I'm not even sure it notices the rev limiter being used, but it surely records the overrevs.

What is the source of this statement?

The source was a thread as noted by Crash above that has now been edited.

The original poster said they bought a used 996TT and it had some drivetrain noise and he took it to the dealer and there was a problem. When the dealer checked the ecu they said there was a stage 2 overrev recorded and thus the warranty was void.
