thanks for the write up - very useful.

A quick question - how many miles/kms has your 996tt done? I've a metallic rotational noise coming from my diff area which I can hear come in from 40kph when cruising on a light throttle. Problem is not with wheel bearings. My 996tt has only done 89k and it seems to me that diff problems shouldn't occur at this low mileage.

Well, I have a low mileage front diff for sale if you decide you want to replace yours. I bought it because I thought my diff was going bad. My problem ended up being a wheel bearing, so I just put my diff back on the car. And my replacement is sitting unused.

Adam, where / who did you source the bearings from?
while I’m quite familiar with swapping diffs / bearings, I have yet to perfor, this on a 996 front diff. any special tools needed?

UPDATE: ah I see the info. thanks for the write up, definitely handy to get me started on disassembly.
