For higher mileage 996 guys
I'm tempted to buy a 2001 996TT with around 75k on the clock, no mods and appears to have been taken care of. What can I expect to have to replace with this high of mileage? I'm looking for a weekend car- not going to the track. For $5k more I can get one with ~40k miles on it. I'm actually hoping 6SO will talk me out of it, but any input is appreciated.
Thanks!

For 5k more it may be worth it for lower miles... You will need full docs on either car, though. Gotta think clutch, accumulator, power steering reservior, brakes, suspension,tires....35,000 miles will eat a lot of those items up, but then again so will 40k if the work hasnt yet been done. Make sure the cars have their papers, or call the shops that have worked on 'em.

Go with the lower mileage car if they both have solid service history.
My car has 72k right now, but it was owned and maintained by SPI guys. Knowing the history, i wasn't afraid to buy a higher mileage Pcar.

5k in your pocket will buy a lot of things...
Mine has 78k and has had no problems aside from the rebuilt engine at 70kmiles ($19,000 fully covered by CPO). If i was you I would not worry about the mileage (seriously) but would pay extra for a CPO car. According to the dealer my car was an early 01 which is why it apparently had an early kind of cylinder. Car is perfect now...

Is 2002+ really the way to go?

The 2002 really only gives you one newer year and a glove box and cup holder. I have to admit that I appreciate those two add-ons, but I would recommend you consider getting the X50 option for the larger K24 turbos and GT2 intercoolers....plus about another 40 horses....it was a $17K option that you can pick up for just a couple thousand difference...well worth it in my book. I've put 24K miles on mine since I bought it in November of 07 and it's been pretty trouble free...rear tires are only good for about 10K and there will be some things that might fail like hoses, diverter valves (should be changed out from OEM anyway), brakes, stock shocks and other wear items. Other than that, it's a wonderful car to drive and the prices are attractive now. They went to a fibre optics radio system in 03 that they call the "MOST" system...sort of a pain to work with...but all in all anything from 02-05 that has a good maintenance history with a decent PPI is fair game. Don't be afraid of mods...a lot of us (me included) bought stock cars then spent thousands modding them. Why not let some other bloke eat the cost of the mods because you don't get much for them on a sale. Just do your research to see which are the better mods

Remember, you can have the motor rebuilt for about 7K depending on the area where you live.

Bought mine a few months ago w/ 58k mi. I'm already fixing the tranny, because the dealership never did the tranny update. That's a $4700 fix w/o the goodies! Not to mention the rotors, cv joints (all 6 of 'em!) You will quickly find yourself w/ $10k in fixes. These are typical high mileage issues. The most important thing is to get your PPI done, even if you are buying a car from a porsche dealership!

frankster had a CPO'd car from a Porsche dealer and when he went to get the suspension upgraded it was found the CPO was not done and the dealer lied. get a PPi done from a Porsche specialist
