2001 996TT Tiptronic Tranmission Trouble
#19
I know this an old post. But, I just found a leak coming from the front of my tiptronic (area where the tip connects with the front transfer case) and was wondering how your rebuild turned out. I would like to drop off my car in Houston for the repairs. I was actually planning on rebuilding the tiptronic to hold more power as I plan to go to K24/18g turbos soon. Since I just found this leak (was changing the oil/oil filter) I might just do the rebuild earlier than I planned. I know Akram at Motorwerks does a complete rebuild for around $6k, but I wanted to see if there were other options in Houston. Any help would be appreciated.

Just to be clear, akram does not only rebuild the tranny, he makes it stronger. He charges $6k for the work plus another $1.5 to $2k for removing your tranny and putting it back in.
I can connect you with someone who can rebuild your tranny to OEM specs, but if you go with k24/18g, it will eventually fail (unless you keep the boost low, which i hope you do not plan on doing).
I shipped my tranny to be rebuilt to OEM specs once and then the clutches burned up when I put alpha 28 turbos in the car. I then shipped the tranny to IPT tranny in New Jersey to have it built. IPT charges about what akram does, but does a little more work than Akram. I run the **** out of my car and have no problems at over 630 wtq at 1.6 bar. There is another forum member who had IPT build his tranny also, and he is happy with the work.
One note, if your car is a 2001, do not have the TCU software tuned. It didn't work for me. I recommend you buy a new TCU (part number ending in .04) if you plan to have the TCU tuned.
Wish I knew all of this before I got started (I just got started like 1 1/2 years ago, sadly, the tiptronics upgrades haven't really started to take shape until about a year ago). I personally think its because the original tiptronic buyers were not as mod friendly as the new generation buying them for $40k instead of $140k.
Personally, I would just ship your entire car to Dan @ Vivid Racing. He is very open about what he actually does stands by his work.
