Who uses something other then 0w-40 Mobil 1 and why
As it states Who uses something different then the standard Oil in their that everyone else uses. thanks to a link from CJV's thread it got me thinking again about why i ran Amsoil in a previous car.

i also saw a test on tv recently on the speed channel i think it was horsepower block or something about the new royal purple dry film technology also explained briefly in that above link. and both had similar results it just plain worked.

I use Mobile 1 5W-50. Its the highest viscosity approved by Porsche and I like the extra protection in the higher temps we face here in Texas. This viscosity is not sold in regular parts stores in the US but my Porsche dealer gets it for me.

i dont base on one test alone ive seen alot happen to vehicles with better quality oils. but this is just a nice visualization of what hype and real world is about.
Royal purple has always been good so has valvoline and penzoil alot like the german castrol too.
i agree higher viscosity in the hot southern states.

I use M1 5w-50 (S. Florida). Same reason as the Texan. Nice stuff. No issues. My oil consumption dropped in half...now a quart ever 3k miles. Per the M1 site, it has a lot of zinc.
I used M1 5w-40 turbo diesel truck in PA as it had more zinc than 0w-40 unless they have reformulated things in the last 6 months. Both are approved weights. I had no issues...and you can get gallons for 22$ or so at Walmart...so this is the cheapest way to go IMHO for an M1 solution.
BTW, the ELF oil is approved by Porsche (as are a host of oils, almost all are 5w-40 synthetics).
T2 has 240,000 miles on one of these cars with no issues, 0w-40. It is fine guys (at least when it had zinc...).

Where are you guys finding Mobil 1 5w-50? None of my local parts stores carry it, closest I can find is 5W-20, 5w-30 and 5w-40.
I wonder if they can special order it, because oil is oil, if you go to the Porsche dealer you will always pay the "dealer tax".

Believe it or not I have actually seen oil analysis on 10-40 vs 20-50 in hot florida climates and the 10-40 showed less bearing wear.. I used to be die hard in heavy oil for hot climates, along with heavier oil for cars that see continuous racing like road racing..until i saw the analysis with my own eyes.. Tin and copper levels were much higher in the 50 weight.. Not all motors are clearanced for 50 weight oil.. The subaru sti 2.5L is 1 of them.. It showed more bearing wear with 50 weight.. We use Motul on our road race cars and Brad Penn in our drag cars.. Elf i am hearing great reviews and will be studying more on them as well..

I use 5W40 M1 Synth because I was advised that M1 0W40 was changed in 2008 and that the new formula wasn't as good as the old for our cars. I use the TDT version of 5W40.

Im not saying you cant use whats suggested or approved.. I am saying if the engine calls for 40 weight you are doing nothing going to 50 weight unless approved by builder or manufacturer.. The bottom Winter # is not as of much concern here in Florida..

you guys do realize that the first number is weight when the oil is "cold"...(W is for winter) and the second when the oil is "hot" right? Search and read the posts by Doug Hillary on Rennlist and bobistheoilguy...he has done extensive testing and analysis...remember oil in a Porsche is for more than just lube...it also cools the engine...You want it to flow quickly when cold so as to reduce engine wear...hence the lower first number....the second is for when the engine is up to temperature.. I personally don't think it matters what the climate is as engine temperatures are much hotter than ambient...40 or 50 weight will be fine. I have used 0W40 since day one.

Doug is the guy that recommended I switch from 0W40 to 5W40 on a thread over on UMW's board. Kevin actually asked Doug to come into a thread on oil discussions and explain the issues with the formula change in 2008 and why we should change to 5W40.
