Question About a 2001 TT I'm Considering
#16
You guys are killing me. That price is not high at all. I know the 996TT's resale has gone south but c'mon guys. Mine has the same kind of rattle and so do most I have heard. Get a PPI and then decide.

I feel your pain on pricing if you already own one - but as a buyer, I never thought I'd be able (or willing) to spend the coin it takes to buy my dream car, so the prices and availability of high quality cars is awesome right now. PPI will be done tomorrow at the dealer.

leftlane-all the best to you. If the PPI checks out you will love the car. The price for these cars is unbelievably low these days. Anyway, I wouldn't part with mine, so it isn't a big deal, but man, it is hard to believe what you get for the price. Mine listed at $140k new.

Thanks for the comments - I also left a message for RUF here in Dallas to see what they charge for the PPI. After a search, $500+ seems awfully high for a PPI at the servicing dealer, especially when it doesn't include a leak down test. I'd like to get it banged out today either way. I'm sure the car will breeze through it with no problem.

mid 40's is a pretty decent price with the low mileage if it's clean... Can you find them cheaper? - Sure, but you said yourself that this one seems perfect. I'm usually under the assumption that those comparable cars that are quite a bit cheaper are so for a reason, and it may be nothing major, but little stuff that will bug you and cost more in time to fix. The PSS9's are a huge plus, IMHO they are something you almost HAVE to do as the stock suspension is so 'floaty', they really make the car more enjoyable, considering he already took the 3k+ price bullet for you there the car really works out to be a fair deal.
In regards to the PPI, that's really, really high - even if it DID include the leakdown. Without it, thats absurd.
Good luck and be sure to update with pics asap!

PPI at the dealer follows the exact CPO checklist - I asked for a better price, but got nowhere.
As a result, it's going to RUF today for a 100 point check for $240 - plus, I feel very comfortable with the expertise at RUF. Maybe it's not a good sign that I'm trying to save nickels before I even buy the car.....
I'll post some pics when I get the chance.

You are not being cheap just smart.
Who wants to get lubed this early in the morning anyway.
Plus, the money saved could go towards the mods RUF is going to show you.
A very small part of mod costs @ RUF but a part.

Final price negotiations underway, as well as scheduling the PPI. Looks like it might be a done deal - even the SO has given the go ahead (as if she had a choice). Just talked to the servicing dealer and he expects it to pass with flying colors. PPI at the dealer is $518 and goes by the exact CPO checklist, including the DME readout for Type 1 and Type 2 over-revs, but no compression tests. Sound about right?
Mid-40's for a car that stickered at 113k eight years ago sounds iffy for me. Personally, I wouldn't get the first model year of any car, but it has very low mileage for its age; if it has a pedigreed history from the beginning and it's the color combo you're looking for, then mid-40's may be worth it and I wouldn't let a few thousand deter me.
Todd, like somebody else said, that rattle is most likely the IMS. I made a comment to the SA at BW about it and he said it was normal. I says, "say what?" so he opened the bonnet of a 997 Turbo and it had the same rattle. *shrug* If you want to test drive mine or check mine out for comparison purposes, then let me know, but mine isn't stock... especially since I just put a Milltek exhaust on.

Car breezed through the PPI at RUF with ease, with only fairly minor issues being found:
1. A slight pushback of hydraulic fluid for the clutch leads Hans to believe the slave/accumulator fix is due.
2. Some uneven wear on the inside of the rear tires - most likely caused by lowering on the PSS9s and perhaps a need for an alignment.
3. Scrapes on the underside of the front lip protector.
Other than that, no body damage, paint work, 2nd gear popout, oil leaks, spoiler hydraulic issues, or anything else. 340 stage 2 overrevs in 8 years - Hans said he probably does that many in a week in his own car. He said this is an excellent example of a well-maintained car that hasn't been abused at all.
Necessary repairs have been negotiated with the seller and the price has been adjusted accordingly. I have the cashiers check in my hand and will finalize the title transfer and take possession on Monday morning - big grins and good pics to follow.
Thanks to everyone for your help - I honestly can't believe that barring a warehouse fire at RUF this weekend I will own my own TT.

I think it's a good price and you're getting a good deal based on what the PPI showed. Sure, you could have had a compression test done, but I'd not sweat it if there is no evidence elsewhere of issues.
Congrats. You're gonna love it.

Yeah, I asked Hans about that - he said to wait to see if he had any reason to do the compression test and we could go from there, but based on his findings he didn't think it was necessary. Wish I had it for the weekend - it's going to be a long 64 hours (but who's counting?)

Congrats and welcome, sounds nice.... and 64 hours is nothing. I waited three weeks for mine to show up from 3000 miles away and I had never even seen it in person!
You're gonna love the car and just wait till that mod bug hits... I think I'm coming down with it as I write this.... cough, cough.
