Which GT3 cams for 996 Turbo tuned
Hi,
I`m looking advice from which year GT3 camshafts are the best for 996 turbo. Some tuner for 700HP changed only exhaust camshafts on GT3 other one changed both intake and exhaust.
Please let me know your experience according it.
If somebody know Year, Duration, Lift and part number it will be great.
Thanks

If you have good tuner, they will know what cams work best. You shouldn't have to be guessing for answers, that is what your paying your tuner for. If they don't know, it's time to find a new tuner.

Dominik, I don't ean't to crash your party, but here's a quote from a mail I got from one knowledeable engine builder from CA:
"Many over here use GT3 Exhaust cams in these Turbo engines, but the valve motions are all screwy as the GT3 uses a radius Tappet Follower and the Turbo uses a Flat Tappet Follower.. Don’t even go there as the loads are all wrong and damage will occur."
BUT, there's an alternative solution, send e-mail to neil@performancedevelopments.com and ask a complete set of cams. Specially made for the turbo, from billet with correct lobes and trick profiles. About $4k / set. Or you can use German regrinds from dbilas:
http://www.dbilas-dynamic.de/dbilas_eng/index.htm
"The base circle is 2mm smaller.
The cams still works with the standart followers and vario cam plus.
You have to send us standard cams.
We have also bigger profiles.
Inlet 300° with 11.1 lift and exhaust 290° with 11.1 lift.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen, / Best regards,

Their base profile is 276 In / 272 Out with 10.9 / 11.2 mm lift. Around €900 / set. About std turbo cams, this is a quote from Chad's mega project thread, with great respect:
"Here is some information for anyone who is interested about the stock 996tt intake cams.
*Lift is .402" secondary cam lobe .118" ( 0.402 inch = 10.210 8 millimeter, 0.118 inch = 2.997 2 millimeter )
*Duration .040 234 degrees .050 230 degrees
*secondary cam duration .040 128 degrees .050 120 degrees
*cam base circle 1.378
As a side note we have proven these cams will make power to 7500 rpm's"

Dominik,
What are your goals on this engine(Hp/Tq)? What has already been done to your engine? Cams are not something you want to throw at this engine unless the cam profile is the limiting factor. I am not trying to tell you to not upgrade your cams, but some guys do cams without fully thinking about if it the logical move to make at that point in time. The cams serve a purpose on the GT2/TT and the Porsche engineers spent alot of time testing what the best option was before it was put into production. Good luck on the upgrades. I hope to see pictures BTW

We want go over 650HP. Every German tuner modify camshafts because stock turbo cams are very restrictive. Cost of GT3 exhasut cams are cheap so it`s good modification when engine is out of car.
GT3 exhaust cams has 16degree different, thank you for advice
but what about opinion "Many over here use GT3 Exhaust cams in these Turbo engines, but the valve motions are all screwy as the GT3 uses a radius Tappet Follower and the Turbo uses a Flat Tappet Follower.. Don’t even go there as the loads are all wrong and damage will occur"
Could we use GT3 exhaust cams in turbo heads?
16 degrees differents is between turbo cams and gt3 cams from which year?

I am currently investigating the Valve/Tappet issue... I find that very strange, but will come back to you on this!
I am more than positive the GT3 Exhaust Cams are all the same, might be a superseded part number though... If I do remember correctly, 996 GT3 MKII Cams.
