I have 10 cars/motorcycles/boat that have "battery tenders" on them for 4-6 months straight in the winter and have zero issues. It seems the porsche brand charger just might be the problem.

 

The tender didn't cause this. Any tender could have done this. When a battery charges HYDROGEN gas is created, this occurs when the alternator charges it too. When Paulie when to start his car the gas was ignited. The charger had ZIP to do with this. It's true that higher rates of charge will create more gas but the gas is there no matter what if it's a lead acid cell and you're not going to be pushing many amps via the lighter port. Folks who live off grid deal with this all the time. Vent it and there's no issue or danger....

 

One question...how come Paulie isn't getting instant grief for referring to it as a hood? I remember coming on here months ago complaining about not being able to close the hood and was promptly read the riot act for calling it a hood. I still don't know what to call it come to think of it!

Sorry about the hood referral,during all the excitement I was not quite right mentally. In the future I will refer to it as the boot.

I had an Interstate Battery installed because the Optima was not a standard fit. As BLKMGK suggested, I will make sure to open the boot to vent any gas build up after the car has been on the trickle charger for a few weeks. One other theory about the explosion is that one of the battery's lead plates had deteriorated & possibly touched another plate causing a contact point resulting in a spark which ended with the explosion.

 

Eric one of the line items in Obama's health reform is that no citizen can have more than 5 motored vehicles. Which means that you are being a greedy,belly licking,no good,back talking man who should spread your wealth. Now it is only fair for you to donate some of the now illegal vehicles to Mr. Marty. My Lord man you will have to conform for the better of the country.

I use battery tenders on my truck and two motorcycles. They seem to do the job well. The battery tender also has a 10 year warranty, so keep your receipt. I do not use one with the Turbo because I charge that battery with the throttle.
