Heating up the tranny definitely helps shifting

I have to disagree here... I owned a B&M and it is in no way, shape or form remotely close to the actuation of the 996SSK... No way, no how.

The B&M is garbage.

now if it was not installed properly it wont act the same and also different shift links make a big difference for the record i have a b&m and dont like the way it shifts into 2nd gear

200$ is better spent ona 997 shifter or get one used from someone who has upgraded to a 997ssk

Anyway...days after the DE the shifting is better....

And, once DAS did my tranny, they got the shifter in post the "big job" and it was way better, so I have to say that a guru can make the 996 SSK smooth as butter. Probably a hard thing to do, but it can be done. That is the case in my car right now...

Now, that 997 GT3 options SSK sounds interesting...

or the Cup option. 1k for the latter or more.

This is news to me... I had no idea that Porsche contracted B&M to make their Porsche Short shift Kit...Where might we find this information.

It looks like the 2010 GT3 ssk might be the best option. I have been talking with Suncoast & it seems that the 2010 GT3 shifter is priced better than the 997 ssk, plus the GT3 has metal bushings, the 997 has the plastic.

Here is the info I can tell you about the stock ones.
  • 997 Version - Easy upgrade for 996/986 owners. Smoother shifts, slightly reduced throw compared to the 9X6 versions.
  • 997 GT3 Version (2010) - Same as the standard 997 version, but has metal bushings instead of plastic (these bushings are for the left-to-right pivot). This is not a short shift kit, it has identical shift throw as the stock 997 version. The reinforced bushings are probably ideal for racing.
  • 997 Short Shifter - Smoother shift and reduced throw. I would consider this kit the best one available on the planet (for reliability, quality, and preformance gains). I don't think this is made by B&M, I'm pretty certain this is 100% Porsche. The guts do not resemble the B&M or the older 996 Short Shifter.
  • 996 Short Shifter - This version may have been a repackaged B&M kit. It looks identical to the B&M, but was powder-coated black instead of blue. Unlike the 997 versions, this one would take more time to install, and you have to diassemble the shift console assembly for installation.

Some of the benefits of the 997 factory kits (over B&M):
  • Warranty friendly (if applicable)
  • Come with gear mechanism and shift console assembly - makes installation simple, a quick bolt-on and clip-on installation.
  • Comes with alignment tool, so the shifter will be perfectly aligned.

Hope this info helps, happy holidays!

I do not believe this to be completely accurate. The 997 regular shifter and the 997 GT3 shifter do not have the same throw. The 997 GT3 shifter is a short shifter. I have a B&M unit (996/997) in my 997 turbo, and had a 997GT3 factory shifter. They both had the same approximate throw but the GT3 shifter was MUCH notchier than the B&M unit. I did the B&M install myself. The factory 997 turbo shifter and standard 997 shifter have about 30-40% longer throw.
