997 shifter vs 997 SSK
#62
Mine was hard getting into 3rd, and down from 4th to 3rd... If the 996SSK is indeed "just a re-branded" B&M, then shame on Porsche... 997SSK is what I'd get then... The B&M was garbage and that is indeed with having the unit checked/re-adjusted TWICE at two different shops... I didn't instal it, as it came in the car when I bought it, but I would never recommend it to anyone.
Or just get the cupcar shifter/cables...

I have a 996SSK that was awful and then a really good mechanic at DAS in Philly re-installed it and it is now perfect.
The adjustment in these things is really, really key. I use a techart **** that shortened the throw even more as you can drop the **** down quite a bit on the shaft of the shifter relative to the OEM **** I had before.
My money would be on the cup car unit...1k or so.... then the 997 ssk...

picking up mine from Huntington Porsche this afternoon for $50, guys id suggest calling your local dealers to see if there are any lying around. I had no help nor luck from Roslyn and they didnt even call me back!

I dig the OEM 997 shifter set up in my 996tt...less slop, more positive feel and no worries re what gear I am in when I am in the thick of things at the track. I never installed a SSK but I was afraid of mis-shifts.

So the other day I was on the phone with my indy and we both had a good laugh over the "porsche" copying the B&M shifter thing... Seriously, what's the likelihood that PORSCHE would copy a part form an aftermarket vendor? Wouldnt it make more sense that B&M would COPY the porsche parts and BOTCH it slightly???
I've given this some thought, and I can't see it... If the Black anodized part is the 996TT Shortshift kit, I'd bet money that it was B&M that copied the porsche unit. I've driven both, and hands down the 996SSK was nothing like the B&M POS that came in my car. Yea yea, I know it's "all in the setup"... Not so much, no... We tried adjusting it, and it made it better but not great. Way to notchy. Every single 996SSK i have driven has been silky smooth. That's my guess... B&M copied the SSK and didn't get the tolerances correct...

I never looked at it from that angle but it does make more sense that B&M copied Porsche than the other way around.
I know one thing for sure , I can't wait to get my B&M SSK out of my car for a OEM 997 unit.

I don't think you need it if you count the number of slots (threads) the cables are positioned in and put them in the same spot once you put the new one in. That is how I did mine and I helped a buddy do his, and he had the alignment tool, and it was still in the same number of slots.
Those little slots are very small and hard to see, so count carefully!
Hope this helps!

There is no such thing as a 997 and 997 GT3 shifter as they have the same part# so let's just call it a 997 shifter in order not to confuse people further.
B&M has done nothing but shortshifters for decades so what's stopping them from being a supplier to Porsche?

Do you think counting the slots/threads also apply if going from a stock 996 shifter to a 997 shifter?
