Removed TT Engine Sound Insulation

Boy there is a lot of foam back there around the engine panel and above the rear struts, pretty simple job to do and boy what a difference if you like to hear your engine talk. Also took out the two small plastic plugs into the engine bay (this is still effectively sealed)

Read the GT Purely Porsche comparison of the 993 GT2 and the X50 Turbo in the January issue and decided I wanted less of an Audi !

Takes about 90 minutes for the complete job

Arm is infamous around these parts
Is the procedure reversible, or do you need to tear the foam out?

not easily reversible

there are 3 big pre formed pieces, one over each strut and one under the very back of the screen (where rear wiper is) but you do then need to physically tear the foam off the back of the engine cover also for a complete job (bit with the turbo badge on) , its doesn't mis form the panel cover in any way though.

Then you'll be reminded that you are driving a supercar not an Audi

Do you mind doing a write up? I would love to do that so I don't have to drive at 6500rpm in 1st to remind myself that this car is not an Audi.

No seriously, I would really appreciate a writeup.

Thanks!

How To Remove Interior Engine Sound Proofing

1. Don't do this in direct sunlight as it can get seriously hot under the glass at the back of the car

2. Fold down the rear seats to gain access

3. Use an allen key to remove the stays which hold the rear seats in the vertical position

4. Move into the very back and remove the vertical panel covering the rear screen wiper motor, this just pulls out as its on 4 spring clips

5. take this panel out of the car to give you some space,
remove the preformed foam behind

6. Pull out the flat panel at the front covering the ecu ( this is the flat panel below the stepped one with the Turbo logo ) this can be done just by lifting the left side as it flexible. Also take it out of the car to keep the working space.

7. Under this there are two aluminium panels, the left one has the ecu directly underneath it separately attached, so be careful , loosen these off (5X10mm nuts), don't use a socket for the one under the Turbo badge but a spanner and just lift them up

8. Now you can remove the stepped Turbo engine cover panel,
I took it in the house to work on

9. Pull out the two (leather covered side panels with the vents in)
sufficiently to get access to remove the two big preformed blocks of foam which run down each side of the car from the back over the struts to the rear speakers in the passenger area

10. On the stepped Turbo panel, here I just used my hands and a scraper to remove the foam and polystylene

11. Its doesn't weigh much but together its a hell of a lot of foam

12. Reassemble and go and have fun. If you've ever driven a Ferrari its not quite there yet but its one hell of an improvement, when you floor it, without being overly intrusive
