I just can't get past how beautifully the GT3/RS sounds and can't help but wonder if some of that aural symphony is caused by the center exit exhaust. I know the turbo's will always be subdued due to the turbos vs. the normally aspirated counterparts. But has anyone ever tried doing a center exit exhaust on the turbo to get a better sound. Some people are more than happy with the stock power and are just looking to get a better sound, even better than some of the really good sounding exhausts currently offered by the likes of Speedtek, Milltech, Tubi, Europipe etc. I was thinking a very small muffler with a center exit might sound really nice, I know bumper mods would be needed, but a good body shop can easily take car of that. Thanks for your thoughts in advance.

Scott,

The center exit exhaust concept has already been made for the 996T, 996GT2. Lol, only GMG Racing would be so clever to have this idea done already, and yes, it is a piece of art..

I hope that interests you.

I would go with the JIC Titanium exhaust. The sound you get from this exhaust is like no other.

Here we go again....

Many feel the best sound in these cars is the cross flow. Kevin at UMW posted in a recent thread about some of the technical issues that can arise if you are purely seeking power/effiency.

Said by an Audi engineer well: sound is energy. If you hear sound, you are not getting the maximum onto the road (paraphrased from "Truth in 24")....

Me, I have a Switzer and its sound is very gt3-ish. I do not think that a bumper mod is worth it....body shop costs, etc.... But, if I were without cost concerns..sure. And, it certainly looks cool!

FVD also makes a fantastic sound for the turbo.

I didn't know what it was when I got it, as I bought a used "package" off someone, but I've grown to LOVE my FVD sound.

Scott,

We have not tried it, as the market for cutting bumpers up would be virtually non-existent. As JCB mentioned, the cross-flow sounds so good that I don't think it's neccessary to seek complicated installations for sound reasons. But I guess someone has done it...

Many things go into an exhaust note. The important differences between an NA GT3 and a 996tt are.

1. Compression ratio of engine
2. Valve timing events (camshafts)
3. Header, exhaust design
4. and of course the turbo's, they act as a muffler.

I'm not sure you'll get what you're looking for just through an exhaust system alone.

Thanks for your comments guys. I don't currently have a Turbo, so this was just all hypothetical. There are many good exhaust options out there, but as good as they may be, they still don't really compare to a GT3/RS. A few are getting close though. I just was curious if part of the reasoning for the GT3's great sound was the center exhaust due to the resonances of the two outlets being so close together and what other mechanical reasoning behind it.

I know the crossflow systems sound much better and may "per dyno" numbers produce slightly more HP. But (and this is not an endorsement) the dual can systems (especially the Speedtech) are very cost effective solutions. The $1K-$3K you save can be put towards a ECU flash which produces much more HP with a basic dual can exhaust.

Funny - I need to hear these systems in the real world. Oddly enough the nicest sound recording I have heard has also been the older SpeedTech 70mm design. Everyone raves about the x-design, but I haven't heard any sound bites that show a huge improvement in sound. Most of the recordings are probably inferior quality or taken from an odd vantage point. I know the x-design is slightly lighter - 5 lbs, but does it perform better?
