Red Devil and I are on a mission to redo our garage floors-has anyone used epoxy or the race deck blk/wht tiles for their floor. what are the advanatages/disadvantages of either product. i like the grids but will moisture get underneath in time?

Is a 'garage queen' a cross between a mechanic and an
interior decorator? I hope you and your 'Red Devil' get
it set up to your liking. Maybe some track lighting?

we have epoxy and it's nice, but it makes cleanups hard. But then again, our cars leak like no others

I've had epoxy on my floor for 4 years now and love it! Clean up is a snap and as long as you do the proper prep and application, it should hold up well. This only goes for top quality product like U-Coat-It or other commercial grade epoxies. The stuff from Home Depot or Rustoleum is crap if you plan on driving on it in the summer months.

Material cost should be around $.75-$1.00 /sq ft for epoxy where the tiles like Race Deck are in the $3.00+/sq ft range. If you find a quality installer in your area, he should be able to do the U-Coat-It for around the same price as the tiles cost for material alone. Hope this helps.

I painted mine. It's oil proof and great when I have a spill while changing oil. Only time it peels is if brake fluid end up on the paint and I forget to wipe it.

I have one garage with epoxy and one with www.kiwitile.com. The epoxy was the stuff they sell at home depot and was installed following the directions to the letter. It looks like crap. I would not go with a "low end" epoxy. The high end stuff is as expensive if not more) as tile. To have my garage done with professional grade epoxy (same stuff used at dealers) is $4,500.

The garage with kiwi looks great and I love it. It has holes in it so water is not a problem. Small dirt falls into the cracks so it looks clean longer. I use a shopvac on it once ever two months to suck up the stuff that falls in the cracks...

That being said, if you are parking, tile is great. If you do a lot of work on the cars, nothing beats epoxy for cleanup.

Good luck.

I have the Griot's paint/expoy and it's great in terms of wear, etc. No problems there as long as you prep the surface well. The only problem is that it's very slippery when wet so you practically have to put down quartz crystals, sand, etc. to give it some texture - and then it's a real ***** to clean. I mean a real *****. Basically impossible to clean unless you get down on your hands and knees with a scrub brush. If you have enough texture to prevent it from being dangerously slippery you basically can't mop it or anything, it just doesn't work. So that's the big problem. It's so bad that I'm thinking of redoing it with something else because mine is always so dirty looking. If it's just you or you don't care about the dangers of a "slippery when wet" garage floor I highly recommend it. But with the wife, kids, etc. out there all the time you definitely need the texture.

I am in the process of researching these tile floors and am leaning towards Racedeck.

If you put down race deck, you might want to put an adhesive under it. I was coming in a little "hot" and hit the brakes and the car stopped but the deck proceeded to buckle in front of the car. Another couple of inches and I would have car wall impact.

On the other hand, if you're not stupid, you might not have this problem.

I've worked with the race deck and kiwi tile stuff...both nice products, the the problems arise when you get fluid leaks. We had the emergency fire extinguisher system inside the car go off, and it foamed up the interior and leaked out onto the floor. This created a big mess, especially under the tiles. If you put a sealer or some kind of drain under the tiles, i'm sure you'd be fine. Just thought i would offer my 2 cents and insight; but good luck i hope it works for you, whatever route you go

I wash my car in the garage in the winter so I bought industrial tile that are glued to the floor.

I always wondered how the racedeck, etc handle water and dirt, especially the tiles that are like grating.

This is what I did....

The garage has changed a little but the floor is the same. I have it stripped and polished once a year.
