I remember reading somewhere that the factory claims the engines in the 996 Turbo are good for 250,000 miles........

Here's some info on T2's maintainence he's done on his car from an earlier thread-

I change the oil religiously every 5000 miles and tranny and diff fluids at 60000. I had the engine out for a wiring harness issue at 172,000 +/- and we pulled the tranny to inspect the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel. They were all fine (clutch mic'd at 90% material left from a new stock clutch), we replaced the two bearings and the RMS at that point. I've done a front diff a while back, shocks are now shot and will be replaced shortly (new ones will be KW V3's). There have been a host of other what I call minor issues, fuel pump, carbon can on fuel system, miscellaneous hoses/vacuum lines, divert valves, power steering pump had the annoying squeal so it was done, a few slave cylinders and accumulators, coolant tank, water pump, cardan (intermediate) shaft, all three radiators - stuff that goes when the car is driven all year (in the winter also).

My opinion and mileage is based on regular maintenance and daily driving - I suggest you do the same and enjoy the smiles daily!!

Good luck!!

T2 Thanks a lot for this info. There is so many little things that can go wrong with that car, slave, window regulator, diverter valves, wheel bearings, radiators, steering pump etc. etc. but if transmission and engine internals can last so long it's really a good news .

Well time will tell but most who have been around Porsches for a number of years know that the best engine every made by Porsches was to date the3.0L.
It was mostly due to the fact that its seemed to be the least stressed motor produced. You find a few with head stud problems but you find more with high miles well into the 200k range. Maybe the 01-05 Turbos will be the next 3.0L. Maybe????????

Paulunm,

On your question - we replaced the RMS when we pulled the tranny off at 173,000 miles - it did not visually appear to be leaking but with the miles it had it was recommended to replace as it was only a ~$55 part. There were also two bearings we replaced at that time - one was in the center of the clutch ***'y that was making some noise the other was also recommended as it as easy to do.

Not sure what you meant by bushing and RMS??
