Question Maintenance & mod items while engine & transmission out?

The info is out there, but sparse. Hopefully this gathers all info in one thread.

Veterans: please feel free to add.

Planning to pull the Engine and Transmission out? Good time to do all the things either impossible to do or much more difficult to do while the parts are in the car as well as things labor wise would have to be done anyways to get the parts back in.

Maintenance/Preventative:
Coolant reservoir: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...t=Coolant+leak
DIY https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...lant+reservoir
Drive Belt
Plugs
Coil Packs (While in there, have the Valve lift solenoid bracket checked - post #13 in this thread): https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...beru+coil+pack
https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...beru+coil+pack
2nd Gear Pop out fix/insurance: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ml#post2728616
Check for coolant leaks and expired hoses: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...lant-leak.html
Oil reservoir tank cooler: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...coolant-2.html
Water pump coolant hose (doesnt require dropping engine but easier): https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ater+pump+hose

Mods:
Diverters
Large Throttle Body and Plenum
Turbo Inlet side plumbing
LSD
Transmission Mounts: OEM Part#997-375-033-03-M100
Engine Mounts (relatively easy with engine in.) https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...now-think.html
GT2 Slave Conversion
Injectors: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ight=coil+pack

TIA

I remember somebody mention a glued coolant line fitting that needs to be upgrade or fix permanently... I think it is on one of those parts (see pics)

yea, remember reading something in a "coolant leak thread" ... but I thought that hose was bottom side, that it could be upgraded with a 997 part or something.

Madness, the oil reservoir tank cooler - a small radiator for cooling the oil has fittings that are press fit and glued in place. The epoxy breaks down and the fittings pop out. It has happened to me twice now. The original part went 6 years. The second time was a new OEM part that failed after less than 1 year, while under warranty. The problem is that the part is not the big money, the labor to replace it is...if I ever have to go there again, without question, I will have the fittings welded in place to prevent it from ever happening again.

If you are feeling rich....a tranny cooler. Mikelly and Tom Kerr are names to look up. Others have them .....assume it is not cheap....just an idea. Great for a track car....

I think i know what you are talking about with the spark plugs, but I can't find the thread on renntech. On the top of the heads, between the first and second plug is a brass cover for something (cam sensor or something) that has a tendency to break one of its mounting tabs. I think it is a cheap part and worthwhile to change if you are in there. Hopefully someone has a picture in the shop manual they can post up to fine the PN for it.

If you are talking about this one it is in fact a TSB. Valve lift solenoid. This bracket (#27) can fail.... Good thing to check while engine out... Good suggestion from D_Nyholm...

+1 for Tranny cooler, there are 2 types, air to liquid and liquid to liquid, air to liquid will be less expensive but not as effective. Damn near essential if you are going to add a bunch of power and then drive the shiite out of it.
