GT2 vs 996TT: Why buy the one you did?
I was just curious, though I really wish I could say I was in the position to buy one or the other, or both!
Anyways, after reading about the Twin Turbo shootout in Excellence, I thought I'd ask:
What made you choose the GT2 over the 996TT?
and
What made you choose the 996TT over the GT2?
What part of your decision was influenced by having or not having all-wheel drive?
Other thoughts and observations are welcome!

I wanted a Porsche and planned to modify the crap out of it and did not want to tear up a GT2 in doing so. I also wanted the added safety of the AWD. I will have all the *** out, seat of the pants excitement I need when my Viper is finished.

I just test drove a GT2 and Turbo back to back last Friday, and I personally liked the Turbo for my use since it was a lot more comfortable and felt just as fast as the GT2 in a 0-100 run. Ofcourse the GT2 is a better track car, and it's more exclusive than a 996TT.

Did you see the video?

As for me, it was more the price. An 01 was affordable (if you can say that about such an extravagent purchase). If someone would sell me a GT2 for $80k, I'll take it.

I got one of the first 996tts in the U.S. because it was the
best car for me. If Porsche had come out with both at the
same time, I would have gotten the GT2.

one of the primary reasons may be price, the GT2 (right now) is about 190k, where as a turbo is 120. (new prices)
for 70k, you can well mod a turbo past GT2 performance.
but the GT2 has its own benifits
i have to say, the GT2 is overpriced.

wanted a daily driver so picked the turbo (AWD, tip, etc.)
When I bought my Turbo I didn't realize how low used GT2s were going, Newport Porsche wanted something like 195k for the new one they had, so I choose the Turbo based on price also.
looking back sometimes wish I got a GT2 as it is a significantly better car, even though I don't think I personally could drive it in all situations like I do the Turbo now.

I originally bought a 996TT X50, but as I added up the things I was looking to do it, it was rapidly approaching the price of the GT2, so I decided to buy that. Honestly, the difference between the two cars is absolutely tremendous. They drive completely different. Appearences aside, the TT and the GT2 are very disimilar in the driving experiences they give. Being several hundred pounds lighter and lacking the pesky AWD that the TT has, the GT2 is both much faster and handles significantly better. Its almost not really fair to compare them unless you have TT with a very significant amount of work done to it and even then I would question the handling ability due to the added weight and the AWD system. These are two different cars for two different purposes.

That's no fair Josh, you own BOTH. I'm just jealous. Nice write up. Two different purposes is right, I do drive my TT in the rain, and that makes for a big grin. I'm thinking the GT2 in the wet at 9/10ths is probably a handful (as demonstrated by the kid that flipped and almost impaled himself with the hydrant through the roof).

1) I like the looks of the GT2 better.
2) The GT2 has the better suspension, however these parts are easily installed on the turbo. If fact, with the same parts the turbo with awd and throttle body being defeated is a faster platform.
3) The awd will handle far more power.
4) The turbo can easily be brought down to 3,100 pounds.
If you have the money to burn ...... buy the turbo. I will be faster If you want a good car out of the box ............ then by the GT2.

If money is a non-factor, I'd always buy the car that's better stock-for-stock. All that aftermarket performance add on is way too hardcore for me and a shot in the dark. You just can't put a price on a factory-tuned car. Especially when Porsche engineers are involved. That's just my preference.
GT2 over any modded 996 Turbo any day of the week. Heck, I'd pick it out alone for its superior looks. Plus, it's a lot more rare. A lot more.
