They upgrade it for POP detection on the K and Ka bands. You input your serial number and it tells you how much. Mine was $55, which includes upgraded software and hardware additions.
http://www.valentine1.com/upgrades/
Here's what mine will get:
Our POP Upgrade* for this series of V1 will produce the following benefits:
Full Coverage on POP—covers POP on two bands—specifically the MPH Industries models BEE III (Ka band) and Enforcer (K and Ka).
POP Coverage is Automatic:
There's nothing you must do to activate POP coverage. It's built in, and it operates full time.
How to identify V1s upgraded to two-band POP:
V1 powers up with test sequence of warning lights and sounds. At the conclusion of the test, just before the mode indicator appears in the Bogey Counter, you will see a sequence of “P…o…P” on V1s with two-band POP coverage.
One-year limited warranty starting at upgrade date, same as new units.
*POP Upgrade: As soon as we receive your old unit (in operable condition with no tampering of the serial number) we’ll install revised firmware and some new hardware, then return it to you in the shortest possible time.

Recently, my V1 let me know that I was shot with Laser! I was like "OH ****!" looked about 1/3 mile up there and could hardly see the cop, in a blue unidentified chevy malibu with limo tint all around on the side of the fire road... I am a little dissapointed that he wasnt using Ka or somthing, would of had a chance at least. Hate to say it, but with all of the new laser guns being used now our radar detectors are slowly but surely becoming more and more useless as long as laser guns exist. There was no possible way I could of gotten out of the situation on the spot. Going to court soon though

One state VA and the District of Columbia (Washington D.C.) the police can do nothing if you have it in the other legal states.
Speaking of Laser (lidar) I went over to Stalker Radar the other week and used the Stalker lidar gun and it is bad ***, you do not even have a chance if you are caught, and I am happy to know that the front and rear laser works great on my Escort 8500, and I got the Laser warning when the guy who worked for Stalker aimed the laser at a car in the other lane and in front of me too.

Yeah I got the laser warning too, lol (letting me know I WAS IN FACT getting a ticket , on my V1).
msb2tg996- funny thing is I was working for one of our businesses in CA about two weeks ago, and one of my friends there had a laser jammer/radar combo. He made me research the CA laws concerning the jammer, and I found that they will in fact give you a ticket for owning a radar (if they are in a bad enough of a mood), and if you are caught with four or more devices (for example radar in front, a jammer in front, jammer in back, radar in back, etc.), you get a ticket equivalent to a misdemeanor and can be sent to jail. It sounds like CA is very strict about the radar stuff, but here in AZ they can't do crap.

And oh by the way, concerning radar detectors, laser jammers, etc.
I believe Jammers are a federal offense in every state because of the fact that it is actually tampering with an officer's equipment (ie turning it off, etc.), not 100% sure though.
As for radar detectors, its not a matter of which states they are "legal" in, but a matter of which states it was made "illegal" in. No states want them to be recognized as legal, some states just don't go through the hassle of making them illegal I guess.

It all depents, but your headlight or front plate is the main target, the tech. I spoke to said that some of the guns will target black vichicles better than others and some guns will target white vichicles better it all tepends on what gun the officer has, but with the testing I did I hit the front bumper, hood, headlight, and licence plate and got an instant reading on all of them.
Cayenne S, Radar jammers are the one's that are a federal offense because radar is a radio wave, unlike laser where it is a light. Laser jammers (shifters) are only illegal in California, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Utah. But again only illegal if you get caught, it would be easy to trick the officer if you are quick enought and slow down then turn off your jammer so the gun will get a reading. But the Stalker lidar is the only gun that will show the opperator that the gun is being jammed by showing an error code on the display.
