Question Red Tail lamps for 996 tt /GT2

Finally I have got my tail lamp quest completed. I always liked "all-red" tail lamps, but was unable to find anything available for 996 wide-body cars. And, there was the question of what to do about the now lacking back-up lamps. I ended up installing one in the center of the third brake lamp ... Check out the photos of my project and let me know what you guys think....

Sweet. I've been wanting to do this on my C2 for the longest time but haven't decided on film or red tint spray. Let us know how you did it!

I just did the same thing tonight! I used a spray and still need to clear coat it. I really thought I was a pioneer too.

Didnt think about reverse lighting at all

Yep, on my garage floor right now, will see if I can clear spray tomorrow and wet sand wednesday for pics back on the car. I used the red paint for model car tail lights.

It was a LITTLE more difficult than spray can paint. What I was looking to achieve, was a "Red Ruby Look" lens and LED back-up lamp. There were quite a few trials needed in order to get it done. I used candy color base (wine). First, You have to apply coats to the top half only - until you approximate the lower existing red half to the top half. Then unmask the lower part and apply the candy wine base to both halfs until you achieve a compatible blend. Then bake and clear coat. After that is done, re-wire the existing back-up lamp sections into the existing brake lamp circuit (directly at the lamp housing). The wine candy tends to make the white backup lamp areas to appear pinkish (with brake lamps lit), compared to the existing stop lamp, located directly underneath. To solve this problem, I installed a converted Red Coated Double Ligament Bulb. Gives a perfect match. The new back-up lamp install into the existing 3rd brake lamp was a bit more difficult... I started out with an aftermarket LED running lamp assembly. I removed one side of the 2 lamps kit by removing one leg from the harness. Then, I removed the existing brake lamp from the spoiler and gutted the housing....carefully. Trace the outline of the white LED Lens onto the red center section of the brake lamp lens. Cut out your trace and insert the white LED lens into the hole. Some Superglue will hold it in. Remove 3 of the factory installed center 3 volt bulbs (keep the outer 4 bulb circuits in place (to be used later for the 3rd stop lamp). Install the wiring for the new back-up LED, leading to the right tail lamp. Re-wire the right tail lamp to accept the new harness into the previously disconnected backup wiring ( I used a 2 lead disconnect, just in case you want to remove the tail lamp from the car for servicing). Now you have doubled up stop lamps (I love the look) and a white back-up lamp inside the still working 3rd stop lamp. Looks totally stock...

This looks really good. I was torn about my feelings on the black out lights, but this looks really classy. Great job.
