checking/topping pentosin reserve

Hello, fellow 6speeders!

I have few questions today. I did some search in the forum and found various methods to measure the pentosin level in the back. Some are different from the manual and I was wondering what is THE correct way to measure the pentosin level?

Also, if it is low, what is the correct way to top if off? I mean, does the car need to be warm/cold? engine off/on?

I have been looking at them for last couple weeks because I do have that high pitch whiny noise when I slow down which does go away when I push the clutch. So I checked the pentosin level when it was warm and it was pretty low. Since I don't have any problem with clutch and no leaks at front, I think the pentosin level is low on its own (not due to slave/accumulator failure)

I understand that the whine can be caused by the faulty pentosin reservoir whether or not the reservoir is low or full so I may have to change the whole thing to fix the damn noise but I was hoping to see some improvements by topping of pentosin first.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

It's in your owners manual, look in the index at the back for ''power steering fluid level'' it will tell you how to check it properly.

i heard from P dealer mech not to fill this cold, but after fluid's been warmed, as this is the main cause for leakage.

Ive got the same whine you discribe sometimes, and goes away with the clutch pushed in. Keep us updated if topping it off cures the problem

My tech told me to be very careful not to overfill the reservoir or there would be unwanted results. Mine has been changed to the re-designed 997 parts, no more squealing.

I paid $1400 for the parts. When you go to the 997 parts, you have to buy both the pump and reservoir as they are not interchangeable with the 996 parts.

I just got back from the dealer.

I bought a liter of pentosin and was advised to put it in when engine was running/warm.

So I did and I guess it wasn't the low level that caused the noise.

I think I have to buy the 997 parts to fix the problem.

Landjet, did you diy the exchange? Would love to know the details. Thank you.

This seems to be a more common problem than I thought. Now my car is doing it. I thought I read where a car burned because of a leak of the highly flammable fluid. Not sure if that was the end result of the faulty reservoir valve. Would sure like to know as I want to upgrade my suspension next, not shell out $$'s to fix a problem.

I just drove around a bit and the noise is certainly less than when the level was low.

But I believe the root of the problem is the faulty valve which we have to exchange both valve and reservoir to fix.

I'm not sure if this is directly related to that burned down turbo but if the whine is caused by excess vibration, I would assume the vibration might cause the valve or reservoir to leak.

I would like pros to chime in and comment on the level of threat of this whine.

Thank you.

Harker,

I believe there was a dealership TSB on this whining issue as well, have you checked with the dealer to see if your car has had the "fix" done If i remember correctly the fix was to replace the resivior and the associated parts.

Im going to buy some pentosin chf 202 (replaces the old 11s) tomorrow and see if it fixes my whining as i am a bit low.
