996 TT Spoiler malfunction
Well it took me fifty years to buy my dream car and now I have it. All I can say is WOW! 2001 996TT with 8100 miles on it. I would post a pic if I could figure it out Seal gray over black supple and just beautiful. Only one small problem. That spoiler malfunction light is driving me crazy. Spoiler is fully functional and working correctly but the dumb light comes on every time. I've read a little about the micro-switches and bleeding and I'm sure this has been covered here many times. Any advice would be appreciated. I have an appointment with the local master tech next week but would like to be able to speak somewhat intelligently to him. Thanks in advance for any advice. Love this place

Congrats on the new car. Lots of people (me included) have had problems with the hydraulics on the spoiler. Things to check:
Look for leaks at the base of the hydraulic lifts on each side.
Lube the rods with some WD-40. Sometimes slow movement will give you the light.
The thing works like this: There is an electric motor that sits next to the fan, mounted on top of the black plastic cover under the rear deck lid. When it rotates, it drives a worm gear that then pushes in two plungers that look a lot like the dual pistons on a tube of epoxy. In my car, the set screw that holds the connector between the motor and worm gear had worked loose. The motor turned, but it slipped so the spoiler didn't move. It started just with a little slipping, and eventually stopped completely. You could still hear the motor spinning.
The part cost well over $1000. Try to get the one you have repaired.

If as you say the spoiler is working then it is most likely the microswitch. This sits on the right hand side ram. It's job is to detect when the spoiler has raised correctly. If it is malfunctioning then the system will 'think' the spoiler hasn't risen correctly.
I think you can replace the microswitch. You can remove and replace them (I have) but be very careful as they are quite fragile.

Thanks Gez. That must be the problem as it does raise and lower correctly. I got her out this morning for a drive. What a freakin car. I will speak with my tech about replacing the switch next week
Thank you FAST FWD for the congrats! Thanks also for the info. Your explanation helps me understand how it works. I did in fact clean off the pistons with some WD40 thinking the same thing but the light still goes on. I'm sure I can get it fixed and then she is perfect (until the next challenge)

Jon, good tip about the WD40. Ever since I changed to an aftermarket rear wing, one side has been sticking on the downward cycle. I just removed the wing and WD40'd the pistons, reconnected the wing, and now all is right with the world again. Thanks.

It's amazing how many things can be fixed with WD-40, Duct tape or a pair of vise-grips.

You guys are AWESOME! Thanks for putting up the pics for me. I'm a little computer challenged at times . She is pretty clean. Since purchasing I have had the front bumper removed and refinished at Kundensport and also had the wheels stripped and refinished factory silver. Also replaced the front spoiler and the lug bolts with polished stainless steel. They are really nice but a little pricey. Got them at Maxspeed for those interested. I have shown it at two concours events and won both . Afer I get the spoiler working correctly she will be 100%. Then? I love this place!

My wing was working fine for a while. Then it started staying up sometimes even after coming down to a slow speed, I had to manually bring it down, no code though. Now it just won't go up or down and gives the dash an error code...
Any one think its fluid level or I can do some WD40 tricks to it?
