because there weren't any x50's in 2001 and the kbb values the model year by averaging out pricing, the prices of the 2001's are a relative better deal.

Ray C. is infamous around these parts
I have 41k miles and smiles on my 01. Except for the glove compartment on 02's and up, there really is no reason to avoid 2001. I have only had to replace an O2 sensor and rear tires since new. Oh sorry, the DV's were also done to support the GIAC tune. Good Luck!

cupholders are coffee catapults

I find that the cupholders are coffee catapults only in my 2003TT. The ride is so rambunctious that any liquid in the cup gets shot out the lip opening of the lid; and that is just normal driving...
Forget driving with liquid, or food, for that matter. Just my $.02....

01 is lighter according the Porsche's published specs.
early 01's had the front bumper "warts", later ones do not.
01's had solid spoke wheels, 02's had hollow spokes, however, see #1
02's have flat black swithgear
02's have Bose (01's sound system's sucked)
02's have cupholders
02's have glovebox
Other slight differences in the interior (console, etc)

Chassis and drivetrain are the same.

Good luck.

ps. I own an 01, purchased it new, no problems other than a few warranty issues. Still love driving it after 9 years

Tpup has already touched on this but I believe the 02 used fiber optics for the stereo. There is no reason to avoid a good 01 just because of the model year.

have never ever thought about cup holders, cup holders are for people who use their cars as dds. if your a car guy cup holders are great in your wifes car. i know a guy that bought a new jag over the porsche because his wife liked the jag cup holders better. guess while your sitting on the side of the road waiting for 3a it's nice to have a nice cup holder...(sorry jag lovers)

+1 to that. My 1991 C4 is going strong at 19 years old and has been my most reliable car I have ever owned. I am hopeful the TT will be the same.

I use to despice cupholders, but today I grace them. I don't have any in my MY2000 986 and sometimes I need them

Obviously not a reason to discard the '01 996TT, selection should be based on condition not accesories.

Well put, slap some 30s turbos and you will not care about cupholders, glove box... Or anything, you will be with a smile on your face that is priceless!!!

I have an '01, just turned 10 years old on the 14th and I am still absolutely thrilled with it after almost 5 years, most of which has been very modified. The 01 has an analog stereo, maybe some 02's, the have MOST fiber optic. In all honesty, a glove box would be nice but, I dont miss it, the door pockets hold quite a bit. Cup holders would really be nice but it can be installed at a later date.

I think what most people are saying is spot on, buy the most car for your money, be careful of mod'd ones, especially advertising crazy hp for stock block, allot of folks take their car to the dyno wars and then mysteriously they are for sale shortly after. Definitely PPI (I did 2 to make sure the local seller wasn't connected at the dealer). Be picky, dont be afraid to walk if it isn't what you're looking for.
