Glad you agree, I owned 2 before my recent purchase of a 997TT, and i feel these are the only sports cars, that allow you to drive them hard, without breaking down. These type of vehicles allow you to used them on a everyday basis, but yet you can go to the track on the weekends and play a little.

I'm not going to lie Chad, I really wish I had a cup holder.

 

In terms of cup holders; my first car was a TR-6 which had no AC and I lived in Texas. It also had no cup holders. I learned to put my Coke between my legs and I still do that. It solves the problem and keeps my package cool

 

Like everyone has stated already, 01 is perfectly fine as is the rest. I would let color/miles/mods/options/price decide the car, not the year.

My 01 had cupholders (not sure if this was added if ppl say stock had none?) but I never used them anyway. As for the glovebox, there is a center piece as well as storage in both doors, so it's not really needed.

I also had a 02 Carrera...didn't notice a diff

 

For those looking for a Tip, I think in 2002 they beefed up the Turbo's transmission to make it stronger than that used in the Carrera to handle the extra HP. In 2001, the turbo's tip transmission was the same as the rest of the 911 range. While I haven't heard of any problems at all with the Tip transmission, which is supposed to be extremely reliable regardless of year, this is an important consideration if you are planning on modding the car for even more HP. I'm told that 525-550hp is about the limits that the TIP can handle, but I haven't researched the issue much yet. If you are looking for more HP than that, you'll most likely be buying a 6 speed, but for someone like myself who's 6'6'' and simply doesn't have room to work the clutch, this was an important consideration in deciding in 01 vs 02.

The Bose stereo upgrade in 2002 from the supposed crappy 01 stereo was another big consideration. I agree that the cupholder is mostly just a catapult for whatever you put in there, which I learned first hand the other day in my new 2002 996tt Tip .

 

my 01 has been great and it does have cup holders way up high in the center console, I was told do not use them they will catapult anything in there into the back seat - I do not miss the glove box.... isn't that what the front bonnet is for

 

I love my 02 and drove 9 hours away to buy it and don't regret passing on several 01's here locally to buy it. I love the extra glove box storage and I did forget to mention the BOSE stereo earlier. I've owned 7 Porsches in my life and the BOSE is the best factory unit Porsche has ever had. This car is the first Porsche I've never changed the stereo and/or speakers out for upgrades. Some of the 01's had a cassette deck with a single slot CD player down low and that to me looks antique and so out of date. I really don't have any objections to an 01, it's just that the car was improved upon in several ways starting with 2002.
