Hahaha, you are right. I must be tired today. For some reason I was thinking about the MK1 headlights.

I thought they looked wonky back in the day, but never really realized how cheese they were until 2009 ish when they started yellowing. I had them polished to look like new - and that's when I realized how dumb an idea they were.
I know WHY Porsche did it and I guess I can understand the need to distinguish the turbo (and later the carrera) from the boxster, but I still dont like it. People complained back then!

i like 'em too. but they are friggin huge. took some getting used to. mine are covered with the blue vinyl tint. looks good against the silver. does anyone have any experience with the ebay china pre-painted "eyelids" trim pieces? i've been thinking about trying them but they don't lay flush on the headlight assembly ( i'm told ) since it's slightly "rounded". so i'm thinking potential peeling.

I do have to say that, as a lifelong die hard Porsche nut, I was really turned off by the original 996. Slab sided, fried-egg lighted... fugly. And it had nothing to do with the Boxter similarity. I couldn't giva s.. about the stupid prestige element. But (for me) cars are more than just go fast - they need to stir emotions. The 930 did that, so did the 993 GT2. And 10 years ago, the 996tt just didn't differentiate itself enough from the fugly 996 to make that leap. And IMO the lights did not look that much better than the original 996 lights. It took the 997 GT3 to completely bring me back to the fold.
Looks-wise, the 996tt is nice, but it only goes to 10. The 997 GT2 RS def goes to 11.
All that said, being pragmatic and looking at $/hp, I am now in the market for a 996tt...
As far as the headlight mods go - not really my cup of tea, but whatever makes you happy.

My issue with the 996 headlight isn't the shape, but the fact that they chrome plated the housings.
A simple charcoal grey or black (like almost all other headlight housings) would have been much better.
I would like to get mine disassembled and the chrome bezels painted dark grey or black, but I'm not spending $1,000+ for something this simple.
