A working strategy that will not hurt the car.

JeremyS is infamous around these parts
I use Mobil1 5w40 Turbo Diesel Truck. Compared to 'regular' Mobil1, it has a higher buffer content which is good for cars like ours that don't see a lot of miles and thus may go a year between oil changes. It also has more ZDDP (50% more).

I also agree that most of us change our oil often enough (in terms of miles) that it probably doesn't matter as long as you are using something in the proper visocsity range...

I can’t help wondering if there is any real world study available comparing the use of "crap oil" versus good oil and long oil change interval versus short oil change intervals. What would we really be talking here in prolonging engine's life; 10,000 miles per engine's life cycle or 100,000 miles?

I always find "oil threads" on enthusiast forums interesting....

Go to BITOG (bobistheoilguy dot com) to get a sense of how superficial the discussions on most car forums really is...

I don't believe M1 5W-50 has been brought up- recommended by Kevin over on Rennlist- it's a European formula (has NOT been reformulated like 0-40 has in the US) so it supposedly has high ZDDP content.

It's hard to find in the us, AV Lube in Ohio has it on sale.

Question , if one uses an oil with no zddp , cant you just add a zddp addative in there with it ? would it not be the same ?

Last year when these 'discussions' arise, I asked a old high school buddy that's a Master Porsche Tech with 37+ years Porsche experience about this... he mentioned to use Mobil 1 along with a can of Swepco oil improver. As this oil improver has the additional elements needed to bring Mobil I up to spec.
That's my routine now for all my cars - others may have different schools of thought.

Two weeks ago I sent a sample of my oil (mobil 1 0/40) to blackstone Labs...the report was that the oil was good for 6,500km in order to have a good TBN...So if you use mobil 1 0/40 on a 997TT with a flash change oil at 6,500km and be safe...On the other hand on higher hp cars oil needs to be changed earlier...So it is all based upon hp...
As a general rule I would never use a thicher oil than 5/40 but i dont have a problem going with any top brand of oil...

emadelta86, tell him about the cost of fuel... nearly $8 per gallon.

My wife and I have a home in Italy (Sicily) and get back there quite frequently and each time I get there I nearly die of shock from the cost of oil based products.

Folks, consider yourself lucky in reference to the cost of oil and fuel here in the US.

I don't have the issue, but have heard of others having it, what causes the small puff of smoke upon start-up?
