All told to do it right its a considerable expence. Yeah you can hack the axles and not do anything else, now you have a car that does not handle as well as what you had, yeah it seems faster because its scarry to drive at the limit, and may in fact be better for drag racing stuff. but IMHO a well sorted 4wd tt is a better car than a non posi no front axle deal. But If you do all the mods correctly (like a gt2) it works really well.

And yes ive driven all 3 types on a track, gt2,996tt4wd, no posi 996tt 2wd

I don't disagree, but actually you do NOT have to hack up the front axles. They come apart at the clip. If you ever go back to AWD, just clip em back in and grease...

Interesting, i've done 3 conversions on early 996tts and had to cut the cv apart to get the stub shaft, I wonder if there was a change in later cars? that would also let you rebuild the cv instead of buying a new axle ?

Maybe that's why my first time doing the conversion took 2-1/2 hours Once you pull the axles, remove the grease and all the ball bearings (6 or 8 *****?) and the "cage", you will see a small clip on the spline way inside. Just reach in with small needle nose or circlip pliers and I believe you sqeeze the clip and the stub axles just slide off like butter.

Yeah, the black may throw it off a bit--I think it has faded a little, too--the car spent much of its life in the Florida sun without being tinted before I got to it

Does car need to get alignment after this? Thanks.

The price quoted sounds very reasonable to remove and reinstall the pair of boots as they are pressed on and not fun to remove.

I re-aligned mine as I went to RWD, but I would imagine NO, if just doing the boot repair.

xeattle is infamous around these parts
It is required to re-align as you have to remove the steering knuckle which has you popping off the the ball joints and the mount to the strut so you can pull the axle shaft out to fix the boots...or even when you're doing a 2WD conversion it's the same process.

Here is a shot from Pelican showing everything that is removed...I wouldn't believe the alignment would be exactly the same after hooking all this back up...

Aren't NEW front axles on Pelican or Suncoast like $300 each? Sounds like a ripoff to fix the boots at that price.

It's an easy diy to swap axles btw.
