Here's my take on the 997 Turbo...although it will have "490" horsepower in advertisement, it will have more than that under the hood; it will do 0-60 in about 3.5 sec. The quarter will go in the mid 11's at 122 mph. It will be even more impressive at the track, where the adjustable suspension will be even better than the 997S system. The new AWD system, with individual wheel control, will make the package even better. It will be very hard to touch it on a road course.

Why are they even bs'ing around with 490 though, it's 10 away from 500, just at least give it 500, that is the magic number these days.

I agree with Gary, I was hoping for 550hp.

 

I think that even January 2006 is a highly optimistic date. It's more likely to hit the market end of 2006 (MY 2007). It makes sense, since the 996 TT came almost exactly 2 yrs after the 996 C2 hit the market.

Here are the rumors I've heard. The 997 TT will...

- not have the oval headlights of the normal 997
- have a shape which is inspired by the CGT and the 959
- have LED rear lights like the CGT
- have a little more than 500 hp
- have ultra-big turbo air intake openings

I am hoping with all my heart that this is true. Carrera GT style headlights and taillights along with big air intakes and over 500 hp practically gives me an erection just thinking about it. That is EXACTLY what I was thinking porsche should do, since the oval lights, although classically beautiful, are exactly that, classic and old.

 

I think porsche might keep numbers underrated so that carrera GT numbers are not too close! I am sure at 490 it will be producing somewhere in the ballpark of 530. This about it, I dont think I have seen one GT3 dyno at 380hp, most are close to 400hp and most other P-cars dyno a whole lot higher than they are listed! I am pretty sure that porsche will not allow the car to get beat by the competetion. The 2001 TT is about 4 years old now and there are very few cars that can hold their own against it! I am sure porsche will be ready! At least I am hoping

 

The car is almost 5 years old in US. First cars arrived here in Apr 2000 as an early 2001 model.
We've been chatting here and prev at CFG's board in the old RC days about it for that long , that's why we are bored /there is so little left to discuss. We are all ready for the next one- even if it's a year or more away.

 

The fact that it doesn't appear on the CGT doesn't necessarily mean Porsche felt it was not superior to a traditional manual. It is said that before production of the CGT started Porsche engineers tried and failed to develop an updated version of their PDK trans.

There are many cars on the road now that can hold its own or better than a stock 996 turbo.

 

I think that depends upon where the comparison is occurring ... on a flat open freeway with no traffic ... quite a few ... on a twisting surface road with traffic ... not many.

 

i wouldnt say many! sure the AMG benz series, the z06 can keep up but can not beat it, the viper and some other supercars but not many really! I think the new turbo will be good enough for the competetion

 

There is also the persistent rumor/story that Porsche is working on a Coupe or even 4 door (!) car that will take the V8 from the Cayenne. A while ago the rumor mill was turning out stories of a mid-engined V8 Coupe. Now, that would be interesting as well I think........

I'm just going back to how it used to be. How many cars could hang with a 97 Turbo S when it frist came out? Then compare that to how many will be able to hang with the 997 TT when it comes out. That's all I'm saying...

 

But everyone and their brother wasn't pouring in HP like it was going out of style. There is only so far ahead you can stay when the Chevy's and the Ford's of the world are getting into the "supercar" market.

A Z06 friend of mine mentioned a C&D letter that said comparing the vette and the 911 was silly, different people buy them. Until recently, vettes looked like crap, drove like crap (except for posibly in a straight line), and were constructed like crap. Especially since the advent of the Z06, you can't say that quite so much anymore and the lines between Porsche people and Vette people may be thinning.

Although as a Z06 owner did say recently...you get what you pay for when you buy supercar performance for $50k worth of parts/labor.

 

You made my point .... Porsche has not kept up.... They had the lead and are getting passed by. It is even worse in their standard 997's...

But we love them anyway...
