I am going to check out a 2001 996TT nearby. Black on grey with 38k miles. The asking price is $79k, but I figure they might go lower. What would you guys consider to be a good price for this car? Or should I stay away due to the mileage? I have seen several selling with less than 15k miles, such that 20k+ miles seems relatively high. What would you folks consider high mileage?

I would keep looking - there are several 2001 TTs on the market (great one on ebay right now) that you can have below $70K with around 20K miles.

If you're willing to pay that kind of money you should be able to get a 2002 TT with really low mileage if you shop around

These are cars are meant to be driven. They're perfectly fine as a daily driver (i can attest to that... 29K miles in less than 2 years), so just do your due diligence and have it fully checked out. Dont assume that lower mileage equals better buy.

I personally would stay away from an early model car with very few miles...as the car obviously sat in the garage and was just left to waste away....too little mechanical/service history to determine if it's a good buy.

I'd be more inclined to pick up a well maintained higher mileage TT with a clean service history. If you do a search, you'll see that most of the TTs that had problems, warranty issues, etc. all had relatively low mileage (less than 8K).

Good luck.

I would totally be looking into trojanman's car, but the problem is I need to get rid of my M3 before jumping in a Turbo, and the only practical way is to do it on a dealer trade-in.

cotact your local porsche dealer, they can do the swap for you, they can buy the car that you want, ie trojan's then, you trade in your car at the dealer, you probabaly have to pay about 2000-2500 to the dealer to do the deal, u also probably have to get the financing from them too, then you pay about 1500-2000 to certify your car this is the best part in my opinion .. and porsche will certify your car for another 2 years or 60,000 or 100,000 miles cant remembr what the max mileage is.. i liek this better bec. this will be a porsche factory extended warranty not an aftermarket warranty from any shop..

the porsche warranty will cover your motor if it suddenly takes a dump after u buy it

this is what i did to get my turbo....

Medici,

what are the specs on your M3 - I could conceivably have an interest.

With respect to mileage - Porsche dealers won't warrant batteries on cars driven less than 7500 miles/year, so a 2001 should have at least 30,000 miles according to that rule.

Mine has 26K miles and a fresh Porsche battery

I'm really hot to move my car, so let's work something out!!

BTW, $79K is WAY too much for that car you're looking at. With that mileage, it should be about $67k-$69K.

Sounds like a good plan. Unfortunately, the closest dealer is 300 miles away.

I just sold my '95 Supra TT that had been modified with big single turbo, fuel system, standalone EMS, etc. My car had 80k miles when I sold it. It had a Greddy T88 single turbo boosting 1 bar with 514rwhp on pump and occasional bursts of 1.8 bar on C16 making 667rwhp. While I never abused it, I had my share of spirited driving. The compression when I sold it was the same as the day I bought it 100% stock. The engine itself was untouched, even kept the stock cams. Never missed a beat, drove on several road trips and it never left me stranded.

I would just hope a Porsche could hold up half as well stock as my Supra did modified as I do plan to modify whatever car I get.

$79k is too little for that car. $89k is more like it, considering how much more the owner has to spend to keep it running in top form.

The turbo gets better with mileage, and worse with idle time. I say go for it.

Just get it thoroughly checked out.

Nice try. I see you're doing your part to raise our car values, eh?
