Evo Viii Versus 996tt

I am seeing more and more tuners now switching their efforts from some 996TT/993TT development to EVO VIII turbo development. Some tuners are stating that they are getting the same hp levels as stage 1/2 996TT's with the same reliability.
500-600hp at the flywheel are claimed. Anybody out there have one of these and a 996TT and how do they compare. Yes it's a 2.0L 4 banger but some local tuners here in So. Cal are diverting they're efforts(???) to the EVO which might be saying something.

I am seeing more and more of these on the track and they are quick, sure not as quick as say a Stage 4 TT but they do handle well and are lighter than a stock 996TT. How many people are getting these for track use.

500hp for 10K isn't that bad if the engine lives..

With the recent shift to EVO development is this the new Datsun 510 from the 70's..

Maybe it's time to man up to the Rice Rocket crowd??

Terry,

I have not noticed your trend with the 996 tt tuners moving to the Evo, they are 2 separate markets. It would be like honda tuners to start building 1k Hp hondas and Ruf dropping its porsche program to jump on the bandwagon lol.

I´ve a friend who has both, and every time he goes to the track he takes the EVO. He said there´s no comparisation between the two, the EVO is much more exciting and pleasant to drive on mountain roads and circuit he said. No mods on the 996TT and the EVO has only a sport suspension and better brakes, nothing more.

Your comparison is like a super hot sexy girl vs. some ugly girl. Sure both get the job done but who do you want to wake up to in the AM. Get the point. Sure the evo might be fast and easy but so is the ugly girl!! LOL Look at both next to each other it's a no brainer!!

I will say this, in order for an EVO VIII to keep up with say, a stock 996TT, the EVO needs to run about 25lbs of boost on the stock turbo. I raced one at the 1/4 drags here in GA, so I am rather familiar with their level of mods. They are quick cars, but like anything with Mitsubushi, the reliability leaves a little to be desired.

They handle very well, but die off above 100mph because of gearing/aerodynamics.

You guys are brutal. Evo's are wonderful cars. They're not the prettiest beasts around but I would much much rather slam one of those into a wall racing around a track than a TT. I don't see why it matters if it's pretty or not when you're tracking it.

Not from I have seen lately, I have seen them go as fast down the straights at several tracks as TT's, 135mph+, now with the cams and bigger turbos they don't need to run more than 20psi to get 450hp+ like the smaller turbos..True they won't probably do 185mph but how many TT's go faster than 160mph on the track anyway..

I hear they are way more reliable than the Subaru WRX 2.5L engine. These engines have been around for many years and with the iron block, good rods, bolts and studs they are good for 550hp at the flywheel when set-up correctly and will run all day on 91 octane with the boost turned down a little.

Mitsu is pretty smart on this one as they offer bumper to bumper 5yrs/60,000miles, powertrain 10yrs/100,000miles warranty on EVO but who would keep it stock & u touch it the Mr. W is gone!
