Which one? 2002 996 turbo or 2006 ZO6?
Hi guys,
I am looking to purchase a used 996 turbo again. I really miss and regret selling my 2002 turbo I had last year. I just don't think I gave it enough of a chance before giving up on it. The reason I sold it was I thought the all wheel drivetrain made the car too competent and almost boring to drive. I really like rear wheel drive cars the best. However, now I am board to death with the weak acceleration of my current car the NSX.
To solve my horsepower deficiency, I have on order a 2006 ZO6, which should be here sometime this winter. The new ZO6 is pretty impressive and should make an excellent platform for a project car. I have future plans for a twin turbo kit or a supercharger for the ZO6 to try and keep up with my friends who have some pretty fast cars including 1000 rwhp Supras, twin turbo C5 ZO6s and blown Vipers.
So my question is, should I get the ZO6 or look for another low mileage 2002 turbo? If I buy the 996 turbo, I will immediately get the Evo Stage 4 kit or something comparable. Will a stage 4 kit out run a stock C6 ZO6? I know there are no production cars out yet, but Chevy is estimating high 11s in the quarter mile at over 125 mph. I think that would be a pretty good baseline for a platform car.
How much horsepower will it take for a 996 turbo to keep up with a twin turbo C5 ZO6 or Viper from a 60 mph roll?
The car will be used for commuting, track events and freeway roll on with friends.
Thanks guys for your advice.

If you're buying based just on performance, get something besides a Porsche. Sure, the Turbo and GT2 offer great performance numbers and the ability to modify, but there is so much more to driving a 996 Turbo/GT2 than just the great performance.

As much as I like and respect the performance of the Z06, I will say this: Porsche, there is no substitue.
It is hard to replace the style, the feel, and the overall sensation you get when driving a 911 turbo.

I knew going in that answers to my question could be biased, after all, this is a Porsche board. However, this board is much more open and receptive to other options than the ZO6 forum by a longshot.
I understand there is more to sports car than just pure acceleration. I also agree that the 996 turbo is a better overall car than the ZO6. I previously had two 03' ZO6s prior to my 996 turbo including a 600 rwhp supercharged version. I hated the extremely cheap interior and poor workmanship, but being able to spin the tires through third gear is lots of fun!
My primary complaint with my 996 was that it understeered excessively in my opinion. I plan to install PSS9's to partially cure this characteristic.
The GT2 is the perfect 911 for me, but it is more than I can afford.
Thanks again for the feedback.

Hey Sandy,
Long time no talk ;-)
Hope you are doing well!!!
My views are as follows:
Porsche - NO (move on, you've already had one, you will be happy again, but then you will want to get rid of it soon after). Follow your gut instincts as you got rid of it for a reason. Plus new one is coming shortly, so if you go back to a porsche wait for the new one.
Z06. Great bang for the buck. Can't beat it!. You have driven some so you know what they are all about. I would get one but I just can't deal with the stereotype. You live in Vegas, so you can grow your mullet out ;-)
My suggestion, why don't you place an order on the new RS4 (coming in fall). It's a sick car. check out pics on the RS6.com board. I am getting one I think until the next gen RS6 comes out 2 years after.
take care buddy.

Hey Fred,
It has been a while. I hope all is well with you on your end. I wanted call you about your turbo when it was for sale, but the timing just wasn't right. That car was hot!!
So how do you like the RS6? Do you like it better than the M5? I would think it has a lot more hp potential. Are you planning to go all out on this one as well?
In regards to the 996 turbo, I plan to drive a modified one with PSS9s and other tweaks and see what it does for me. There is no doubt it will feel awesome compared to my Honda. I agree with what you are saying about waiting for the 997 turbo. However, I hope Porsche ups the power substantially to keep the ZO6 where it belongs; in the rearview mirror. I really should have stepped up and bought your car.
In regards to the ZO6, one side of me says the 427 will be the perfect starting point for a supercar killer. But then the other side says; its a Vette. In anticipation of my decision, I am already working on the mullet. It is very trendy for Asian guys in Vegas to sport the mull cut.
I will check out the RS4 and see what it is all about. Is it still going to be two years before the V10 RS6 arrives? I have been on the fence in regards to the E60 M5. I just have not warmed up to the styling yet. Have you considered getting an M5 again?
Take it easy my friend.

I love the Z06. That being said, buying a first year car could be a mistake. The new Z06 has a fairly high compression motor that will be a challenge to slap a blower/turbo on without some other modifications to the motor. Add to that the fact that the car is not even out yet and the tuners have yet to get a crack at it ... it may be awhile before you see a reliable forced induction kit for the new Z06.
If you like the rwd sensation. Why not buy a Gen II Viper and slap a SC on it. You could probably do the whole thing for close to what a C6 Z06 will cost you.

I would go with the Porsche. I have a friend who turboed his Camaro SS. Sure it has alot of power (~550-600 at the crank) but there are major driveability issues. The car refuses to hook up in first or second without slicks (it will barely hook up in third). There is constant fear of breaking something especially the differential. I know the Z06 is a better car to mod than the SS but I would stick with a car which has a proven record with respect to mods.

Sandy:
Hope all is well with you. Amazing that you are back at this crossroad again (the trying times of a car enthusiast). I would say to go for the Z06 since it is something different. You have had a 996tt and know what it is like. The Z06 should be a brute montster. Worst case is, if you do not like it, you get rid of it that first year and move back into a Porsche. The demand for the Z should still be pretty high at that point I would think. Please let us know what you decide to do and keep in touch.
