Thank god the guy is alright. As long as waivers are signed, it should not be an issue. Downforce should be a major consideration at those speeds, however. Even increasing rake slightly by lowering front end could help with downforce.

that car is caged, fire suppression as well.

richard (driver) is an experienced driver, has a promod car and a turbo nitrous busa, probably has been over 200 far more than most.

i think they were using a standard chute. i didn't make TX this year, but did go to a bonneville chute with an air launcher on my car.

Mike
Honda drag racers used to experience this because they would build the back ends so light that when the chute deployed it would lift the back end off the ground, making it difficult to control. Hard to say how a Rear Engine setup would effect this upon lifting and unsettling the back as well.

With a landspeed style chute a longer cord is used so that the chute opens a bit later, once the driver has lift and the car settled, it also keeps the chute farther away for wind resistance reasons. I know a777vegasviper went the extra mile (literally in this case) and order this style chute for his Viper, hopefully this was the case with other competitors and this was just a fluke incident. At these speeds every pass is still R&D which is scary, but the risk one takes when pushing for records.

Based on the description about the strip (I've never been there), you have 1/2 mile to slow down in order to make a 90 deg turn for the return. If you're going 250 mph and say slow down to 25 mph to make the turn, the difference in speed is 225 mph or 810 ft/s. Thus the avarage speed from finish line to the turn is 810 ft/s divided by 2 or 405 ft/s. The time it takes to reach the turn at this speed is 2640 ft divided by 405 ft/s or 6.5s. This corresponds to an average deceleration of 3.9G's. Note this does not account for reaction time once crossing the line. If you're slow to brake then you effectively have even less time. This is not much time and pretty frickin scary if you ask me. They need a safer runnoff area as these cars are just going to get faster.

The rules stipulate that the chute tether is at least 75 ft in length to prevent rear end lift-off.

EDIT: See revised estimations below.

Dave, the turn off is very gradual. You could make it at 50-60 mph in one of these cars if you had to.

You already checked it for me! Sh&T, I should have used an internet calculator. The correct number as Earl pointed out is at 225 mph your traveling 330 ft/s. Do the same calculations and you get a revised number 16s before you hit the turn and 0.6G's. I feel much better. Thanks Earl!

Thanks Mike. Good to know. I'm hoping to make it out one day to see it for myself.
