0w40 vs 10w60

Uh...
That oil (10w60) is for some BMW M-series cars.
IMHO, you really should stick with what Porsche engineers recommend.
Some 5w40 oils are Porsche approved. But, I would stick with M1 0w40.

only need for a 10-60 oil is if you have internals done with different clearances as in rods or crankshaft. if your internals are stock use mobil recomended by porsche. thicker oil will have a negative effect on your variocam plus system, porsche built it to be used with the oil they recomend.

I just switched from 5w50 to Mobil 1 5w40 turbo diesel truck (which along with the M1 5w50 is recommended by Kevin from UMW).
The chain noise at idle is pretty much non-existent now. I'm a fan of diesel oils because of their higher ZDDP (wear protection zinc and phosphorous) content.
The 5w40 turbo diesel is much easier to find than the M1 5w50.

I just switched to the m1 turbo deisel truck 5w-40 oil as well, and the engine is definately more quiet at idle and appears to be consuming less oil, but I haven't really started tracking it closely yet. There is a long thread on this topic on the rennlist 996tt forum.

So far, none- but I only have about 300 miles on the M1 TDT oil. My consumption with the 5w50 was pretty high- 1 qt per 1k miles. The TDT seems to be much less.
I'll keep everyone updated- but so far I'm very happy!

Why not go to an "M Forum" and read two or three hundred of the first 500 oil threads for the answer?
Lets say that oils are specified based on factors that most enthusiast boards are simply incapable of discussing. (ie "they need 10W60 because they explode")... Indeed someone asks "should I use thicker oil for more HP?"... same kind of "where do I begin" kind of response.

Where do you get Mobil 1 5w50? This is the other oil weight approved by Porsche. I don't think its sold in the States. Anyone have a source?

generally specialty lube distributors will have it- check near you. There are mail order places, but I am sure it is stocked somewhere in Denver/etc
