If you want a timer switch, you can just buy one for around $100. Apexi/Greddy/HKS/Innovate - very easy install and very easy to set for manual delay after key off.

A turbo timer connects to the ignition and O2 sensor and it determines from the way you have been driving (O2) how long the engine should idle before it is shut off. Sometimes, there is no idle time at all and sometimes it could be a couple of minutes - it just depends on how much you have been pushing the car. You can also manually set idle time if you want.
You could just sit in the car if you want - but this way it is all automatic and you don't have to wait around.

I let my car idle for a minute before shutting down if i've run it hard not long before shutting down. I don't think this is all that big of an issue though for cars with stock turbos. I think it is more critical for cars fitted with ball bearing turbos.
I get a tiny puff of smoke at initial start up sometimes and other times none at all. Toally normal for them to do this at startup. If smoke comes at other times, then their could be some issues.
