Go to an independent race shop that has worked on 996 Turbos before.

you might want to ask Evo what the true time is for that change. they offer a discount on the labor for the clutch/flywheel install WHEN doing the SC since it makes installing the larger fuel injectors easier. but, the discounted rated is a tiny fraction of what you're being quoted and i find it hard to believe they're saving THAT much time!

Sounds like theft...

I agree on the ridiculousness of this quote.
*It may be accurate*, which means the shop is
not good or experienced at this sort of work,
or simply doesn't want to do it. "Feel the force"!
Keep away. Unless this is warranty work that
Porsche is paying for, go elsewhere.

We just moved and I was in the Hospital with a ruptured spleen. My inexperienced uncle needed to move my ar because we just settled on our old house and it had to be moved from the garage there to our new house. Well in 10 miles he burned up the clutch. At my local dealer in MD they quoted me 12 hours labor on a C2. I told them that a dealer close to this them quoted me 8hrs labor so I refuse to pay for more than 10 hours and they actually said ok. Not sure if it is the same labor as a turbo. I called a few shops but being Maryland and not SOCAL or South Florida no one had any experience with new i.e. 996 -- 911's. It cost me about 950.00 in labor. My dealer had the audacity to quote me 835.00 for the clutch kit when the Porsche MSRP is 611.00. I bought the part from Bradywine in PA for 425.00 w/ overnight shipping. Good luck and call a few dealers although they all pretty much go by the same book.....

I just witnessed an experienced tech take out an engine and transmission in about 2 hours. The engine and transmission were back in the car 6 hours later after turbos replaced, exhaust replaced, intake replaced and CLUTCH replaced and 6th gear replaced !

All in one day....

25 hours is just ridiculous...

RufMD you have to understand that Joe from Ruf is one hell of an experienced tech. In addition, all Porsche dealers go by "a book". Dont know where the book comes from or who makes up the times but they went to a manual and quoted what it said plain and simple....

I can imagine the tech actually doing 5 hours worth of real work and picking his nose for the next twenty hours, actually, I would not be surprised if the tech works on other cars during the time he is suppose to be working on your's and charging for it. Kind of like killing multiple birds with one stone and charging additional hours to the other car's being worked on during your hours... If you think about it, it might be possible to get 52 hours (charged) worth of work done in an 8 hour day....What a scam...That is the service business...

the service rep told me they have to drop the engine and do this and that blah blah blah ... just got off the phone with my mechanic that works at the dealer I'm not allowed to go to anymore (for those of you who know) said he'd do it on his day off at my buddies oil shop on the lift for almost nothing ... it's good to have friends ... thanx guys I thought it sounded ridiculous as well ...

Oh and my service rep just called and said he was going to try and work out a deal to see if he could lower the first 25hr quote he gave me ... it will be interesting to see what he comes back with?

"In addition, all Porsche dealers go by 'a book'."

I know a guy who works in service at a p-car dealer. he works an average of 40 to 45 hours (actual) per week and bills an average of 70 (book rate). the book is just another tool to rip you off. the book time at the p-car dealer is darn near as much a rip off as lawyers' billable hours.
