3rd Party Extended Warranty

Hi,

I just bought a 2002 911 Turbo with 39,000 miles. I was wondering if it is worth getting an extended warranty. The car checked out good and just had a service before I bought it. It has been serviced throughout its years by Porsche and I have the service records.

If I should get one which is a good company? Is there any specifics in the policy I should be aware? How much is the typical policy. I see myself putting maybe 5K miles per year on the car.

Thanks,
Mark

I also recently purchased an 02 Turbo and picked up a warranty from Fidelity Warranty Services. They appear to be one of the better providers out there and most of the Audi & Porsche dealers/shops in my area have worked successfully with them on claims for many years.

Prices will vary significantly based on the mileage of your car, the level of coverage you select and the length of coverage you want. I’m planning on putting 10K+ miles/year on my car and bought Fidelity’s Powertrain warranty for 3 yrs/36K miles to protect me from “marriage challenging repair bills”. Cost me around $3200. Although the Powertrain is their lowest level, it covers most of the big ticket items that can fail on these cars (turbos, tranny, diff(s), engine/IMS etc) which was my primary concern. They offer a bumper to bumper (exclusionary) warranty if you want nearly everything covered.

I purchased a warranty from Fidelity a few years ago when I had my RS6. Two months after buying the warranty, the torque converter went out and they paid for a replacement ($4800) without any questions or issues so my experience with them thus far has been positive.

Check out their web site and research the various levels of coverage they provide. I purchased both of my warranties from local dealers. If you have a dealer that you plan to have repairs performed at, I’d buy the warranty from them if you can.

Conversely, 13 months ago I bought a 2003 996TT X50 with 23000 miles from a private seller. PPI was OK, and I decided to "go naked" (no warranty).

I drive about 27000 miles each year (daily driver), and now with 54000 miles on the clock I realize my decision was a smart (or lucky) one. All I had to fix in this time frame was an oil sender sensor ($200) and replace a rear spoiler ram ($500).

Obviously the key is to find a good independent shop that can take care of your car (stay away from dealers!) - and a pinch of luck. I suppose a daily driver that sees lots of miles would benefit slightly less from an extended warranty than a car that is seldom driven and accumulates fewer miles over a longer span of time.

I wish I had purchased a warranty before my timing chain broke and spent 26,000 for a new motor. I definitely recommend a powertrain warranty.

Another vote for Fidelity. I bought the platinum plan when I got my Turbo and it paid for itself within a year and no fights necessary with them. They paid for $10k in repairs in a year with me paying $300 out of pocket.

Total cost to me was $3500 for a 4 year/48k warranty on a 2004 X50 with 28k miles in July 2009. Obviously the warranty paid for itself 3X over, and I'm still at 47k miles (i.e. 21k miles left or just under 3.5 years).

Just an FYI as something to look in to closely. I have run into a few issues lately regarding 3rd party warranties and clutch issues and have found that most do not cover clutch components. I would expect the disk to not be covered but found that the slave was also not covered...
