E85 Tuning...
#61
Spoke to Kevin yesterday, had a discussion about E85. ( Kevin's fuel system is far from stock..Same system that 1200 hp cars are running from Evoms) We agreed that MAYBE his best bet is to tap out the current fuel system for a pump file (e85) & whatever it is-it is..he will be at least 800-850 on pump everyday. He can keep the race file for C16 when needed.. but then again We re not tuners

Kevin,
Whilst not making the power you are I'm a little tired of the fuel switch/boost switch game as well. There is only one pump in Houston selling E85 as far as I know and I don't have any interest in making that drive every time I need fuel. The car is an absolute blast to drive on race gas with the boost turned up and it kills me to run it on pump at 70% or less of its performance capabilities. It really runs well and I've had some fun with a few cars in H-Town I didn't expect to beat. However, aside from those occasions I find myself letting the car sit for a couple of weeks or more at a time as it just ends up becoming a task driving the car. I've considered bringing the car back to stock (Flash + Exhaust) and driving it that way and using it daily. I'm kind of at a cross roads as well. My next build will be based off performance figures on pump gas for sure. Live and Learn.

...which is a pretty good argument for meth.
Kevin, How much power do you make on wastegate? 650-700whp? If you run pump/meth, you can make ALMOST the same power as race gas. If you run out of meth, you will run on wastegate until you fill up the meth tank. I have had the meth for a couple seasons now and only ran out once, and that's because I didn't check it before I went out. You can also put in any size meth tank you want. Any place that sells race gas, sells methanol. Just a thought. I know you are a faithful Evoms guy, so check with the "godfather" and see what his opinion is. I know Ben had a problem, but who really knows what that was.

Have read a lot recently on bent rods using Meth, not sure I would go the Meth route.
Don't give up on E85, it is a wonderful fuel very knock tolerant.
You may be surprised on how far you can go with you current fuel setup, talk to your tuner or Todd.K.

certainly not apples to apples.
however my GT500 is a E85 car, runs 166# injectors, made 960whp at 24psi. IMO - you'll need more injector then the 83s you have. based on my experience with my car - E85 seems to require 30% more fuel under "normal" driving. Get spirited and you need a bigger percentage of added fuel flow.
you can buy a test kit from Summit for like $20 that allows you to test the ethanol concentration from the pump. So far the lowest I've seen was E75, though it can go as low as E70 in the winters. my tuner in response to a question on that issue said if the car is tuned correctly it's not a issue, it may run a bit richer on E70 then E85, but nothing to be concerned with.
As to cold start up - so far no issues for me. The car sat 2 weeks here in NY with sub freezing temps. I got in her to take a ride on Christmas day and she fired up on the third crank over IIRC.
IMHO - you need a tuner familiar with the bigger injectors and E85 to avoid the drivablity issues that some have referred too.

Not giving up quite yet. Meth just isnt my thing, no offense to those who use it. As it stands now, the car is getting shipped to AZ this week, and we are going to strap it on the dyno, AS IS, and tune it for E85. What power it produces is anyone's guess, but I want to see first hand what it does in its current state before making any decisions on any further upgrades. Even if it only produces the same HP figure as on pump 93, I imagine it will be a stronger tune with more agressive timing. Here we go again.....
