Tip fail...

finally happened....was driving with the EBC off and floored it and it dropped to 3rd gear...revved to about 4k and then then it took off to 7k. Did the same thing in 4th gear too.

Once it free revs, the tranny goes out of gear until i slow down to 2nd gear speeds.

Off to motorwerks to get it built...hopefully they can do it quickly as a i have a 3" Markski custom exhaust on the shelf....

Thanks citibanks for that 0% offer you sent me yesterday lol

How long is it good for even if you rebuld it? Do they actually put high performance parts in it, or just rebuild it with factory parts? I heard the latter?

I can show you what his clutch packs look like. These are mine. Completely toasted. This is what a tip looks like after 100 Plus pulls on race gas at 1.5 bar +.

Also, I just noticed that your car is a 2001. I believe that Porsche beefed up the turbo models tip tranny in 2002, as in 2001 and prior all 911s had the same tranny. Someone who knows more about this than I, please comment on how this might have affected things.

I think the 996 and 997 tiptronic transmissions are all 722.6 mercedes boxes and very similar. I did several pulls (at least 30 at 1.7 bar in 40-50 degree weather) on race mode (Dan@vivid clocked it at ~550hsp/650tq to the wheels when it was 80 degrees)...so its no mystery what happened and I think this would have happened weather my car was a 2001 or 2007 tiptronic.

I did have the tranny rebuilt already once (but only to stock OEM specs). This was about 4-5k miles ago, which is why I think my car lasted as long as it did.

I will keep you all updated on the built and specs I choose. Plans are to have the tiptronic upgraded ASAP. I am taking it to Motorwerks in Houston. Its less than a mile from my house. Akram is very well known and respected. I'll have a box that can handle 1000 whsp/tq (modified clutch housing and clutch packs), new TCU software and a rebuilt TC with higher stall. Valve bodies can also be modified but supposedly give a whiplash feeling. Coolers can also be added.

Upgraded TC with a high stall + fast TCU programming + alpha 28's + 3" catless markski exhaust (yet to be installed) should be pretty quick off the line

I have been driving the car around. It looks like fourth gear is really the worst... actually, its completely gone. The car starts out normally, shifts from 1st to 2nd and then 3rd, but it gets into this 3rd gear mode where it only stays in 3rd gear and the steering wheel controls do nothing. Kinda funny that I am driving around town in only 3rd gear when i thought that one would be screwed.

If I let give it enough power for the turbos to kick in, the tranny kicks out of gear until i slow below 30 MPH.

The Tip is a Mercedes Benz transmission used in 55K line up. All you need is the clutch packs which are not that expensive and its easy to install. According to my friend whom is MB tech Easy peassy and cheap.

Back in 05 when I killed my tip drag racing I remember being able to get a replacement used one from LA Dismantlers for like 1.8k so it was cheaper than a clutch job. Not sure if pricing has changed (I'd guess so?) but it was a lifesaver..

so my understanding is this...porsche has maxxed out the capabilities of the mercedes transmission...no additional clutch packs fit in the transmission so it has to be machined to hold more. Some places use kevlar clutches, double sided and different things...

I think renntech is the cheapest and will do it for like $2,500. They claim to have done many of the trannies, even for Porsche. IPT also sells these transmissions modded. Champion in florida has done several 996's and 997's

Only motorwerks has been able to say their tranny can handle 4 digit horsepower. They do the work for protomotive built engine tiptronic cars I believe. They are $6k, not the cheapest, but I think switzer is a couple grand more.

Oh, and BTW..Sharkster...if you got a non-leaking working tiptronic for under $2k you got a steal! They usually sell for $3-4k now.

so I have been driving the car around town still and it seems that only third gear works. Its really weird...when I first start the car it goes 1st to 2nd and then 3rd and then gets in this mode where it stays in third and nothing can change that (steering wheel shift, M to D on the shifter)...this makes me this it might be something else.....

Any ideas?

Thanks!
