Give these guys a call, they may be able to fix your CDR23 for far less than $400... http://www.beckerautosound.com/

Have been away from everything...but thanks everyone for your replies. My 03 does present some challenges since most of your had 02 or earlier to relieve you from the MOST fun...anyway, the eBay kit seller has been very great to provide his thoughts, obviously, with the right incentives to do so...his reply:

Please note, there have been some changes to the kit over the years to make installing more simplified:

1. The very latest kit we offer, now has a built in cage setter for the 996/986 vehicles. So you don't have to do any measuring. Just clear the opening dimensions to fit the cage and sand down any protrusions so the cage sits nice and flat in the factory frame.

2. All of our harnesses have been properly modified, so the yellow "battery" wire now connects to the yellow "battery" wire of the new head unit.

3. An A/C relocation trim piece is now included to allow the A/C unit to sit in the very lowest slot of the lower console.

4. No rear support frame is provided for the 03-05 vehicles any longer. We've now integrated a rubber strip at the rear of the cage that will provide firm support.

Apart from the information above, please be aware 03-05 vehicles have the MOST fiber optic system. With this type of system, you will not be able to use your factory amp, and your illumination and accessory wire will be separate from the factory harness unlike the DIY shown for the 2000 Boxster.

Below is a thread to a post on 6speedonline.com which shows an earlier install on an 03 996.

I think I am going to give it a shot, and try to do this weekend project with my friends. We recently did a 09' R32...similar difficulty level I would hope.

Does it come with the wiring harness that connects to the cars wiring ?
Also did you use the cars gps and microphone or the ones which came with the stereo.

Cheers

A question for those that bought the Pioneer system, is the GPS update-able?

I still had to swap yellow and red wires, not sure what gives but it obvious that they were backwards as none of the settings would save matching yellow to yellow and red to red. This was on a Pioneer Avic-920BT

I mentioned this to them but he told me to do yellow to yellow and red to red, even though my research i studying the radio manual schematics on the stock radio said otherwise.

Just a heads up, maybe they send me an older harness on accident or something ... Just did my install a month ago or so ..

Yes it comes with the necessary harness, you just need to crimp or solder to the wires coming out of the new head unit to the wires coming out of the supplied harness.

Aftermarket not so hard to do

I had an aftermarket Pioneer Avic 120zbt installed last year and it was not that bad. There are numerous reports here on how to do it with great PDF format instructions. Mine was an 06 997 with the MOST system. I replaced te amp and head unit and used everything else stock. Had to be specific in speaker wiring as Bose have a low ohm rating.

All in all it was not that expensive.

And yes the nav is updateable. Mine was a 110 unit that I updated the head unit software and the maps.

whats the most OEM -looking aftermarker 2DIN nav?

I've been toying with going aftermarket for so long, but really hate the way most aftermarket setups look...well...aftermarkert!

I put a Porsche logo in it and the buttons can change color to match the porsche "orange". SInce it is all touch screen and not ***** it fits just fine. The only difference is the "shiny" portion of the edge...but it is so minimal it doesn't count. I can take a larger picture of the dash if you want.

A local shop installed it with backup camera for a few hundred bucks. I had them install a Escort 9500ci as well. The total price for the radar detector, Pioneer and camera installed was about $2300. Not sure exactly how much labor was each part.
Did you lose any features on the car which are displayed in the gauge pod? I have an 05 Turbo S Cab and am looking at changing mine out as well.

I too bought the install kit off of EBAY and will probably go with the Kenwood setup since I have the Kenwood Jug. Also have the Kenwood single DIN in the NSX and it works beautifully. What speakers? I am thinking of either Focal or Morel with an XTANT X604 amplifier
